Monster Hunter World: Iceborne – How to Forge the Nexus Gae Bolg

Monster Hunter World had collaborated with several other brands and games to bring unique gear into the game. One of the largest collaborations was with Final Fantasy 14. That collaboration brought the Behemoth fight as well as the Drachen armor and Gae Bolg insect glaive to the game. Later in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne‘s lifespan, the Gae Bolg was able to be upgraded to compete with its Master Rank counterparts.

To forge Gae Bolg, the following materials are required:

  • 3 Behemoth Bones
  • 2 Behemoth Shearclaws
  • 3 Aetheryte Shards
  • 3 Firecell Stones

The first three materials are acquired from fighting Behemoth. Players will first encounter Behemoth in the High Rank Special Assignment called The Legendary Beast. This is a repel quest though, so Behemoth cannot be fully hunted in this quest. Once Behemoth has been repelled, the main fight, He Taketh It With His Eye is unlocked. Once that is completed, it is repeatable as an optional quest called A Visitor from Eorzea.

Behemoth is not an easy fight even if players have finished Iceborne and have Master Rank gear. Players will most likely want to find a team to play with. In brief, some tips to beating Behemoth include: using flash pods when notified it’s casting Charybdis. If no one has flash pods, then the person being target by the attack will want to run to the edges of the battlefield so as to avoid cluttering the center of the arena with tornados.

When it casts comet, players will also want to spread them out so everyone has a better chance of being near one when Behemoth starts casting Ecliptic Meteor. Behemoth can also break the comets so it should be kept away from them as much as possible during the fight. If players have Iceborne, Behemoth’s front arms, tail, and head can be wounded with the clutch claw. Behemoth cannot be flinch shot for a knockdown however. Finally, the stalactites in the first area of the fight can be knocked down to damage Behemoth.

Behemoth Bones have a 29% chance of being carved, a 28% chance of being a shiny drop, and a 32% chance of being rewarded at the end of the hunt. Behemoth Shearclaws have an 18% chance of being carved, 100% chance of being awarded if Behemoth’s front leg(s) is broken, and a 14% chance of being awarded at the end of a hunt. Aetheryte Shards have a 22% chance of being awarded at the end of a hunt and a 22% chance of being taken with the Plunderblade. Firecell Stones are not a Behemoth specific material, but 2 have an 8% chance of dropping upon He Taketh It With His Eye or A Visitor From Eorzea completion. Otherwise, the place players are most likely to find them is through ore nodes in the Elder’s Recess, despite their drop chance being 5%. Uragaan also has a 27% chance of dropping one if its jaw is broken.

To upgrade Gae Bolg to True Gae Bolg, players will need:

  • 2 Behemoth Bones
  • 2 Behemoth Great Horns
  • 1 Behemoth Tail
  • 5 Elder Dragon Blood

Behemoth Bones have a 29% chance of being carved, a 28% chance of being shiny drops, a 28% chance of being taken with the Plunderblade, and a 32% chance of being awarded at the end of a hunt. Behemoth Great Horns have a 5% chance of being carved, a 100% of being awarded for breaking Behemoth’s horn(s), and a 3% chance of being awarded at the end of a hunt. Behemoth tails have a 13% chance of being carved, a 100% chance from carves from Behemoth’s tail, and an 8% chance of being awarded at the end of the quest. Elder Dragon Blood is not a Behemoth material and instead is a rewarded when hunting Elder Dragons.

To upgrade True Gae Bolg to Nexus Gae Bolg, players will need:

  • 1 Unity Symbol
  • 1 Behemoth Mane
  • 1 Pure Dragon Blood
  • 1 Large Elder Dragon Gem

True Gae Bolg can be obtained in the base game of Monster Hunter World, but players will need Iceborne to upgrade it to Nexus Gae Bolg. As for the materials required, Behemoth Manes have a 35% chance of being carved, a 50% chance of being shiny drops, a 50% chance of being taken with the Plunderblade, and a 21% chance of being awarded at the end of a hunt. Pure Elder Dragon Blood is obtained as a reward for hunting Master Rank Elder Dragons, as are Large Elder Dragon Gems, though they also have a small chance of being carved or gained from the Plunderblade.

The Unity Symbol is an event quest item however. Players will need to complete the Master Rank event quest called A Shocking Climax to get Unity Symbols. This quest requires players to hunt a Zinogre and a Namielle. Neither should be that difficult to defeat given the quest’s MR requirement of 24 which requires players to have beaten the main campaign of Iceborne to achieve.

Upon completion of the event quest, players will be guaranteed to be rewarded two Unity Symbols with a 20% chance of being awarded a second one and a 1% chance of being awarded two more. Once all the materials have been obtained, players will then be able to forge the final form of the Gae Bolg. The Nexus Gae Bolg has an attack of 744, a 10% Affinity boost, 450 Dragon element, high elderseal, an elemental boost Kinsect bonus, white sharpness, and a level four decoration slot.

Once Behemoth is beaten for the first time, players will be rewarded with the Dragon Soul Kinsect. This follows a similar upgrade path to that of Gae Bolg with a True Dragon Soul and a Nexus Dragon Soul.

To upgrade to True Dragon Soul, players will need:

  • 5 Aetheryte Shards
  • 1 Behemoth Shearclaw
  • 2 Dragonbone Relics
  • 2 Novacrystals

The drops rates of Aetheryte Shards and Behemoth Shearclaws were discussed above. Dragonbone Relics are most easily found in bonepiles in High Rank areas or as a reward for some quests, usually those involving Lunastra or the final boss of the base game. Behemoth’s quests can drop them as well. Novacrystals can be High Rank Kirin hunt rewards or mined in High Rank ore nodes.

To upgrade True Dragon Soul to Nexus Dragon Soul, players will need:

  • 1 Unity Symbol
  • 1 Behemoth Great Horn
  • 1 Dragonbone Artifact
  • 1 Purecrystal

Unity Symbol and Behemoth Great Horn acquisition was discussed above. Dragonbone Artifacts are found in Master Rank bonepiles and purecrystals are sometimes rewards for Master Rank Kirin hunts, but can also be mined from Master Rank ore nodes.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is now available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
