However, with twelve different bachelors and bachelorettes to choose from, you might be wondering who’s worth your time and who doesn’t necessarily have your best interests in mind. Not to worry: we’re here to reveal the five best and five worst partners in Stardew Valley and hopefully make the choice just a tiny bit easier for you.

Updated on March 3rd, 2021 by Anastasia Maillot: Although there aren’t any new bachelors or bachelorettes in Stardew Valley, there were two original ones missing from the initial list which were roughly average in ranking: Harvey and Maru.

With Stardew Valleys latest updates and the game’s fifth anniversary in 2021, it was more important than ever to bring back the ranking of best or worst bachelors and bachelorettes for players still wondering who to marry in their playthrough.

12 Worst: Haley

Haley is a great example of the fact that you should never pick a person based on their looks. She’s your typical pretty blonde girl, but she’s a bit of a princess which can get annoying at a farm where hard work and soiling your hands is inevitable. She’s quite easy to increase your relationship with by just giving her daffodils, and since she’s usually around the town center or by Marnie’s farm taking photos, she’s relatively easy to find. However, after marriage the gifts she gives you are not amazing, most of them just food that you could be cooking yourself.

11 Best: Shane

Alright, hear us out on this one. There are many flaws in Shane’s character, but those flaws actually make him one of the deepest and most lovable characters in the game. He starts off by being rude to you, but if you keep buying him beers at the inn or giving him pizza, he’ll warm up and open his heart to you.

His story is also incredibly saddening, but worth experiencing. After marriage, he mostly gifts you with junk food like Pepper Poppers, but he means well and he’ll be a much happier person along your side, which gives us the feeling of having been useful and helped him. Best of all, he’ll bring in some chickens to the player’s farm after marriage.

10 Worst: Leah

Leah is the artist of the town and is kind of a tricky partner to get with. She has a lot of exceptions when it comes to the Universally Liked gifts, although she does like most foraged items which makes her somewhat of an easy person. However, to truly wow her, you’ll be struggling to make ends meet as he taste includes Truffle, Wine and Goat Cheese. She also walks around quite a bit, making her difficult to find at times. After marriage she’ll gift you mostly items you can forage yourself, which is a bit underwhelming for all the effort you went through to charm her.

9 Best: Alex

When you first come to Pelican Town, not everyone will welcome you with open arms. Some will react neutrally, while others will even brush you off until you get to know them better. Alex, however, is immediately kind to you which is a breath of fresh air.

He comes across a bit cocky at times, but he’s just incredibly ambitious and wants to get into sports professionally. He’s always at the town center practicing, which makes him easy to find and he’ll like most foraged items which makes charming him easy. Unfortunately, after marriage, he mostly gives you food only.

8 Worst: Harvey

Harvey is the local doctor and works at his clinic where he takes care of the sick. While he definitely has a noble life plan, Harvey can be a bit of a killjoy due to how much he hates indulgent foods. Most of his liked gifts will be healthy foraged items, and his loved gifts include coffee, pickles, truffle oil and wine.

He’s one of the older bachelors in town, which creates a bit of diversity. He comes across as shy and a bit sad, which might give him an air of mystery. Harvey’s romance storyline is actually not half bad, but his personality isn’t the warmest when first meeting him.

7 Best: Maru

Daughter of Robin and Demetrius, Maru is a genius who loves all things science and technology. She’s often working with either her father Demetrius at the lab or with Harvey at the clinic. Maru’s friendly personality makes her a character who’s easy to approach.

That being said, she can be a bit expensive to bribe with gifts. Her loved gifts include diamonds, gold bars, iridium bars, battery packs, miner’s treats, and pepper poppers. Her ten hearts event is probably one of the more unique ones in the game and includes a large sentient robot.

6 Worst: Abigail

Abigail is among community favorites, but if you look at the pros and cons of charming her, especially early on in the game, it becomes obvious she’s kind of a high maintenance type of girl. Abigail is usually hanging around the bridge and on Friday you’ll find her at the inn with her friends Sam and Sebastian.

The easiest Loved gift you can get her is Quartz, which at the beginning of the game isn’t something you should give away too easily. She also hates vegetables. If you can afford to charm her with diamonds and the like, she’ll give you loads of rare items as gifts after marriage.

5 Best: Emily

Emily is a bit of an eccentric, but her colorful personality makes her very charming. She’s easy to find all year round since she works at the inn, and if you begin your quest for her heart early in springtime, you can simply give her daffodils for easy relationship progression.

Her Loved gifts are a bit more expensive, unfortunately. Once you get married with her, she’ll give you a pretty wide range of special gifts from Duck Feathers to Omni Geodes, making her a really good partner to opt for if you like the extra resources.

4 Worst: Elliott

Elliott is another artistic soul living in Pelican Town. His cabin is found on the beach, where he writes his stories. While he can be usually caught by the bridge leading to the beach or at the beach itself, he’s quite difficult to please until summer when you can offer him grapes as Liked gifts.

His Loved gifts are expensive and rare items like Duck Feather, Lobster and Pomegranate. Moreover, as a husband he doesn’t give you that many things, aside from seafood meals and coffee every once in a while. He’s just not worth it.

3 Best: Sam

Another person who’s generally very kind towards you right off the bat is Sam. He’s often found walking across the city to go to his part-time job at the Joja Mart. Every Friday he’ll also be at the inn with Sebastian and Abigail. Sam is an incredibly easy person to please, as long as you can get him Pizza, which can be bought from the inn.

He also likes Joja Cola which can be found from trash, fishing or bought from the inn’s vending machine. On top of that, he gives really good gifts as a husband, from food to Earth Crystals to Geodes.

2 Worst: Sebastian

The hardest person to charm and please is definitely handsome but introverted Sebastian. He’s very picky, with tons of exceptions to his Universal Likes and it can be easy to get things wrong with him. His Loved gifts are of the expensive kind, from Obsidian to Void Egg to Frozen Tear. He hates most foraged items and is a bit difficult to find depending on the season. However, every Friday he’ll be at the inn with his friends Abigail and Sam. The only good thing about him, aside from his looks, is the fact that he gives quite expensive gifts as a husband, similar to his Loved gifts.

1 Best: Penny

The best partner in the game is Penny. She might not look like much and she might seem a bit serious and too focused on her work, but she has a golden heart and is incredible driven to help the children of Pelican Town learn. You’ll usually find her at the Museum, teaching the locals kids, or sitting at a bench at the town square. She likes most foraged items, but her Loved gifts a bit on the expensive side with Diamond and Melon on the list. However, Roots Platter is among her Loved foods and is easy to make with Cave Carrot and Winter Root during your first year. Once married, she offers very useful gifts like mixed seeds, food, and geodes to help you out. All in all, she’s a well-balanced partner and worth all the work.
