Square Enix Granted Trademark For Chocobo GP | Game Rant

Square Enix received another trademark that might excite fans of the Final Fantasy series. Square Enix has been busy acquiring trademarks concerning Final Fantasy, and one of the company’s most recent successes are a series of Final Fantasy 7-related trademarks possibly indicating a sequel to the mobile game Before Crisis: Final Fantasy 7. This latest trademark covers a property only known as “Chocobo GP,” but chocobos are a well-loved part of Final Fantasy games and fans already have theories about the trademark’s use.

Chocobos have been a staple in Final Fantasy ever since Final Fantasy 2, with many considering the flightless birds to be the series’ mascot. Typically used as mounts by adventurers, chocobos come in all different sizes and colors and are known for their distinctive “kweh” cry. These creatures are popular enough with fans that they have had their own spin-off games in the past, some of them being Chocobo Racing for the PlayStation and Chocobo Panic for the iPad. The trademark for “Chocobo GP” has fans thinking a racing game is in the works, one that could bring chocobo racing to more modern gaming platforms.

If this trademark seems familiar it’s because a similar trademark was registered by Square Enix as part of a trademark series in December of last year, but only in Japan. The newest trademark concerning the chocobo racing game has been registered in the US, and it seems like it will use the Chocobo GP name as opposed to the Japanese-only “Chocobo Grand Prix.” It is a bit confusing that the Japanese trademark also registered for the Chocobo GP name, but it could be simply to account for written language differences between Japanese and English.

What is clear is that this new chocobo game will probably be included in the chocobo spin-off games series and could even be a direct successor to Chocobo Racing. Although Chocobo Racing came out for the PlayStation, fans seem to think Chocobo GP might be a mobile game. So far mobile games in the chocobo series have only been released as Japan exclusives, so it could be that this time Square Enix is trying to tap into the big mobile phone game market in the US.

However, the Chocobo GP game could also be a part of another upcoming game in the Final Fantasy series. Several Final Fantasy games have chocobo racing in them, and the reveal trailer for Final Fantasy 16 did feature chocobo mounts riding into battle. Whatever platform this game ends up on, Final Fantasy fans never really seem to tire of seeing the beloved birds in action.
