Since its launch last year, Riot Games has been hard at work building Valorant‘s esports scene. Essentially being launched to an online world, Valorant has had to rely on online competitive events so far. That looks set to change as Riot Games has announced an international LAN event as part of its 2021 Valorant Champions Tour.
Riot Games may have always intended for Valorant to become its next superstar esport, but 2021 will prove whether or not it sticks. In 2020, Riot Games was able to host its first official tournament for the game, and fans saw 100 Thieves win Valorant First Strike. Throughout 2021, Valorant will host official online tournaments that lead into three different Valorant Masters stages. Teams that place at Masters events will earn points going to the end-of-year capstone event, Valorant Champions 2021.
To many players’ surprise, Valorant announced that the VCT Masters Stage 2 event will be hosted in Reykjavík, Iceland. This international tournament will feature top teams of pro Valorant players from around the world, competing together for the first time in Valorant‘s first LAN competition. Since the competition will run on offline game servers, there will be a virtually lag-free experience for teams. The top two teams each from North America, Brazil, and Europe will compete, while the top team each from Korea, Japan, Latin America, and Southeast Asia will compete.
This Valorant event will take place in the Laugardalshöll venue in Reykjavík, Iceland from May 24 to May 30. Apparently, all teams will have to quarantine once they arrive in Iceland, which is for the best since it will be an in-person competition. Unfortunately for fans, the competition will not have a live audience, so supporters will need to wait for more information on how to watch online.
Since the VCT Masters Stage 2 will feature teams from all over the world, it will be an interesting taste at what players can expect from the championship at the end of the year. With Valorant investing heavily into the development of its esports scene, like with the VCT Game Changers Program, many fans can’t wait to see if Valorant can keep the hype going. Until then, fans can stay occupied with the upcoming VCT Masters Stage 1 events taking place through this March.
Valorant is available now on PC.
