From the beginning, Destiny 2 has been an ever-evolving video game, and it has had more than its fair share of bugs and issues. Even with the current Season of the Chosen, there were still problems popping up, like players experiencing game crashes before starting events.
A notable issue that players have noticed in Destiny 2 is the teleporting enemies in activities, not the same way the time-traveling robotic Vex do, but more like one minute enemies are there and the next they’re somewhere else. Bungie’s update provides more details on why this has been happening in the game, and how it’s working to resolve the issue.
Bungie was made aware of Destiny 2’s teleporting enemies issue after listening to player feedback. The developer realized the problem started back when Beyond Light was released, and that it has persisted to Season of the Chosen. In the update, Bungie stated one of the reasons the game would teleport enemies is so players can finish a mission instead of waiting for a boss to appear while it’s stuck.
According to the update, there are several issues causing players to see this increase of teleporting enemies, stemming from the game’s networking logic. It’s a byproduct of one of the key changes Bungie made in the previous 3.0.0 Destiny 2 update, which combined two separate streams of network traffic into one. One stream handled things like the game AI while the other handled matters such as playing music, dialogue, and displaying mission objectives.
The author used the analogy of having two highways for different types of cars, then closing one to make a wider highway that handles all cars. However, there’s more traffic than the remaining highway can handle, requiring more lanes to be added. As a result, there was far more traffic in this single network stream than Bungie previously anticipated would be there.
The process is exacerbated by additional network traffic caused by the game rapidly spawning AI for the Cabal enemies players face in Destiny 2’s Season of the Chosen, most notably flamethrower-wielding Cabal. Building on the update’s highway analogy, flamethrower-wielding enemies are like tanker trucks and take up a lot of network usage. On top of that, the large groups of Cabal in Battlegrounds are a contributing factor to the teleporting issue.
Despite this, Bungie is already working on improvements, some of which will be added to Destiny 2 in an update scheduled for later this month. The developer is also looking at other solutions such as targeted fixes for enemies spawning in the wrong spot then teleporting back into place. However, the update points out that Bungie will not be able to fully eliminate the problem from Destiny 2, though it can reduce the frequency of teleporting enemies.
