During Sony’s State of Play event at the end of February, Square Enix revealed a single-player DLC expansion for Final Fantasy 7 Remake; featuring Yuffie, the young Wutai Materia hunter from the original game. The DLC, part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade, will have Yuffie as the main playable character as she embarks on her own mini-adventure that takes place during the events of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Based on revealed footage, most fans are drawing the conclusion that the episode takes place while Cloud is with Aerith in the Sector 5 slums.
In the original Final Fantasy 7, Yuffie was an optional playable character that never got a lot of attention. Despite appearances in Advent Children and Crisis Core, she’s never gotten her own spotlight. Intergrade will finally let Yuffie have her time to shine as the protagonist of her own story, and hopefully set her up for an important future role in the second installment of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Alongside her partner Sonon Kusakabe, Yuffie’s expansion will involve seeking and stealing Materia from Shinra, the corporate giant that controls Midgar.
Yuffie’s episode obviously won’t be as long as the full game, but how much playtime can fans expect? Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s story was told over 18 chapters with individual lengths that varied, adding up to an average playtime of 35-40 hours. While completionists likely spent closer to 50 hours finishing the game, casual players would have spent approximately two hours in each chapter. Fans of the game will know that some chapters were very short while others included a lot of extra activities that extended overall playtime, but in general, two hours is the expectation for chapter length in most cases.
The Yuffie DLC is confirmed to be two chapters long, a fraction of the full game’s length. Assuming that the two chapters are roughly the same average length as the ones in the full game, fans can expect to spend approximately four hours total completing the Yuffie episode. If Yuffie’s story includes side objectives and tasks similar to some of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake chapters, that number could increase by a couple of hours, depending on player tendencies.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade is the PS5 upgrade for Final Fantasy 7 Remake‘s original release. In addition to the PS5 version, buyers of the Intergrade edition will gain access to the Yuffie episode. However, anyone who already owns Final Fantasy 7 Remake will have to purchase the DLC separately. To make things even more complicated, the episode is confirmed to be exclusive to the PS5 console.
Square Enix hasn’t announced the price for Yuffie’s episode as a standalone purchase, but because the Intergrade edition is priced at $69.99, the DLC will probably be priced at around $9.99. Both the length and the price could be something else entirely, but based on the available information these are the most likely predictions. Fans eagerly await an announcement for part 2 of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, but until then, Yuffie’s episode will have to hold them over. The announcement of DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Remake was an unexpected surprise that will take gamers back to Midgar this spring, a little over a year after the game’s original release.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade launches on June 10 and is available now for preorder.
