One of the worst kept secrets in the video game industry right now is the Nintendo Switch Pro console. Reputable sources leaked the existence of the Nintendo Switch Pro console months ago, claiming that it will deliver 4K resolution games in docked mode and 720p resolution in handheld mode. Most reports describe the Nintendo Switch Pro console as a mid-generation upgrade for the Switch, comparable to the PS4 Pro or the Xbox One X, but it seems that the Switch Pro may differ from its counterparts in a major way.
According to ResetEra user NateDrake, who has proven to be an industry insider in the past and has leaked information about the Switch Pro that was later corroborated, the new console will apparently have some exclusive games. NateDrake says that the Switch Pro exclusives will “especially” come from third-party partners, possibly suggesting that they will actually be multiplatform games that would be impossible to run on a standard Switch console.
NateDrake continues that there may not be a lot of Switch Pro exclusive games, but that they “know of at least one.” NateDrake doesn’t offer any hints about the Switch Pro exclusive game that they are privy to, though, so all fans can do is speculate at this time.
Luckily, more information on the Nintendo Switch Pro console should come to light sooner rather than later. The latest batch of leaks about the console suggest that it will be entering full production this summer, possibly to launch it this coming holiday season. If that’s true, then it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for Nintendo to officially announce the Switch Pro console at its likely E3 2021 Nintendo Direct presentation, which would hopefully answer any questions about exclusive games.
While the Switch Pro may have some exclusive games, fans shouldn’t count on it being positioned as a proper next-generation console from Nintendo. Nintendo itself has insisted that the Switch is only half-way through its lifecycle, and beyond that, it wouldn’t make sense for the company to alienate the massive install base it built for the standard console. It’s probably safe to think of it like a New 3DS situation, where there are some games exclusive to it, but the vast majority of upcoming Switch releases will be compatible with both consoles.
Again, all of this is just speculation until Nintendo itself decides to reveal more information about its future console plans. Hopefully the Big N puts the rumors to rest soon.
