Razer is a brand known by many for its various high-end PC peripherals. From gaming mice, to laptops, headphones and beyond, the company offers premier quality gaming accessories, recognizable by its arguably rampant use of RGB lighting and its black and green color scheme. However, the company has begun offering a rather unorthodox line of products, especially when compared to what Razer usually sells: “Sneki Snek” plushes.
The gaming peripheral company has been on a bit of a streak in terms of coming out with unexpected products. During CES 2021, Razer unveiled a high tech mask concept with RGB lighting. While the mask is still only in the concept phase, the Sneki Snek pillow officially hit the market today.
For those wondering what Sneki Snek even is (aside from being a snake), it began as a sketch from one of Razer’s designers created for his newborn child. A cutesy version inspired by Razer’s recognizable three-headed serpent logo, the creation has since spawned “countless memes,” tattoos, and its own dedicated fanpage.
A Razer.com exclusive, the Sneki Snek head pillow is designed to give gamers the right amount of head and neck support to reduce muscle tension and fatigue. A universal fit strap enables it to easily attach to most gaming chairs, and features a washable pillow case, so Sneki Snek won’t turn into stanky stank. The pillow retails for $29.99, and is the second Sneki Snek item to be released, after a full-fledged regular plushie. While some gamers may think these products seem a bit silly, the reasoning behind it is what’s getting people’s attention.
Razer has partnered with conservation group Conservation International in an effort to save forests around the world. Dubbed the Razer Conservation Project, the company is pledging to donate part of the proceeds from each Sneki Sneki item purchased. Translating into 10 saved trees per purchase, Razer’s ultimate target is to save at least one million trees, with additional Sneki Snek products being unlocked at different milestones. Fortunately, others in the gaming industry have also stepped forward in contributing towards conservation efforts. After pledging to donate 5% of its sales to conservation, Ori and the Will of the Wisps protected 29,000 acres of rainforest, a space roughly double the size of Manhattan.
The charitable efforts from Razer continue a wave of giving from the gaming community. In addition to those who benefitted from the GameStop stock fiasco donating consoles to children’s hospitals, an unknown Street Fighter 5 competitor donated their tournament winnings to charity last week, demonstrating just how generous some gamers can be.
Razer’s Sneki Snek line of products is sure to be a hit with Razer and gaming fans as a whole. With the added cause to conserve the world’s forests, it’s likely just a matter of time before fans unlock the remainder of the mascot-based products. While cute, others are more interested in Razer’s actual high-end tech. Fortunately, Razer has announced its Razer DevCon event, which promises to show game developers the latest and greatest aspects of the brand’s products.
