The Harry Potter saga came to an end in 2011 with The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, during which Harry’s destiny was fulfilled when he put an end to Voldemort once and for all. In the final scene, a much-older Harry is with his friends at King’s Cross Station waving goodbye to their kids as they ride the Hogwarts Express and begin their own wizarding journey. At the time, it may have seemed like that would be the last we would ever hear of Harry’s story again, but that may no longer be the case.
Jason Kilar, the CEO of WarnerMedia, recently talked about the company’s expansion plans for the world of Harry Potter during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Communications Conference. Calling it one of the most beloved franchises in their catalog, he mentioned that there is “a lot of fun and potential” to do more with it, especially with their continued partnership with creator J.K. Rowling.
While Kilar did not give any specifics on what the plans would entail, he did seem to hint at future Harry Potter projects in both film and television. Currently, rumors have been circulating that a live-action TV series is in its early stages of development at HBO Max and that a potential film sequel to follow The Deathly Hallows is in the works behind the scenes.
In 2016, British writers Jack Thorne and John Tiffany teamed up with Rowling to create a stage production called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, an original story based on Rowling’s characters. The two-part play, which was also released as a book, explores the lives of Harry and his friends as they navigate through parenthood, as well as the exploits of their kids in Hogwarts. After Kilar’s statements during the investors’ conference, many fans believe that the possible sequel projects he is referring to will involve The Cursed Child in some way.
Should Warner Bros. decide to go through with these expansion plans, they will be left in the hands of Tom Ascheim, who was recently appointed by the company to oversee all future projects involving Harry Potter properties. His responsibilities pertain not only to films and television works, but also to stage productions and theme parks.
Additionally, Aschiem will serve as a representative of the company for any discussions with J.K. Rowling, as she also controls the rights over the Harry Potter franchise.
The Harry Potter collection is now streaming on HBO Max.
