Similar to the previous Project Eevee, The Pokemon Company has launched Project Piplup to celebrate Sinnoh’s popular starter Pokemon, possibly to get Pokefans geared up for Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl coming later this year.
Not only is 2021 Pokemon‘s 25th birthday, but it’s also the 15th anniversary of the fan-favorite 4th generation of games, Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, which makes the announcement for their remakes all the more exciting. Later this year, players will get to return to the Sinnoh region in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl on the Switch, where they’ll get to choose from three starter Pokemon: Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup. Seemingly to coincide with the celebration of the Sinnoh region with both the remakes and Pokemon Legends: Arceus coming to the Switch, Pokemon has launched Project Piplup for a limited time.
Project Piplup is reminiscent of Pokemon‘s previous celebration Project Eevee back in 2018. At the time, a number of adorable promotional videos were released to highlight the in-person events going on in Japan, but The Pokemon Company also launched a ton of merch, such as cute Eeveelution hoodies for the Eevee plush to wear and sleeping Eevee and Eeveelution dolls. Of course, this was ahead of Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!‘s release and Project Eevee helped generate hype for the games.
It looks like The Pokemon Company may do the same with Project Piplup, which is geared towards “spreading the charm of Piplup” for a limited time, ahead of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl‘s release later this year. One tweet from the official Project Piplup account shows a shot of a Piplup plush, possibly implying that a bunch of merchandise featuring the starter Pokemon will be on its way later this year.
While Pokemon Centers throughout Japan held their own promotional events for Project Eevee back in 2018, the celebration never reached Western regions aside from social media campaigns, meaning that Project Piplup could be only formally celebrated in Japan as well. Many giveaways and limited-edition items were only available to residents of Japan at the time, which could spell disappointment for Pokefans in the rest of the world.
Project Piplup has also launched a corresponding Instagram account, where a number of posed photos featuring the Diamond and Pearl favorite starter Pokemon appear. At the very least, fans hoping to join in on the fun will be able to watch Project Piplup’s celebrations online via videos and social media as before with Project Eevee.
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl launch late 2021 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
