One Piece: 10 Devil Fruit Abilities That Can Perfectly Counter Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy might be well on his way to becoming the next Pirate King in One Piece, but that doesn’t mean that the guy was blessed with luck or power. In fact, this kid came from pretty humble beginnings and his Devil Fruit isn’t very strong by default. It was only through an inhuman amount of work and dedication that the Straw Hat Grand Fleet Captain made it to where he is now.

That said, there have been examples of Devil Fruits in the past that have either countered, synergized, or ignored the abilities of another DF. Smoker vs Ace, Mr.3 vs Magellan, or even or Akainu vs Ace all work as examples, but what are some Devil Fruits that naturally counter the Gomu-Gomu No Mi? Let’s take a look. Oh, and we aren’t including any Devil Fruits from the movies, even the better ones.

10 Daz Bones: Supa-Supa No Mi

Starting with the most obvious example, it’s the Devil Fruit held by Daz Bones. It’s hard to imagine that this villain from one of the earlier arcs of the series could hold a candle to Luffy a staggering 1000 chapters later. But, remember that we’re just talking about the Devil Fruits themselves, and not so much the user of them. The Gomu-Gomu DF lets the user stretch their body, rebound from any and all blunt attacks, and a variety of other things. But, one of its big weaknesses that was shown early on is that this power is pretty weak to sharp objects like knives or spikes. So, a Devil Fruit that can turn any part of the person’s body in a blade would be dangerous against Luffy, especially since he fights bare-handed.

9 Miss Doublefinger: Toge-Toge No Mi

And, along that same train of thought, Miss Doublefinger’s DF would also be a bad matchup for Luffy if he fought someone of equal strength who was using the Toge-Toge No Mi. Of course, Haki sort of cancels out most of the weaknesses of the Gum-Gum fruit, but if both users had equally strong Haki or if the concept never got introduced, Luffy would be in real trouble.

8 Sugar: Hobi-Hobi No Mi

A big flaw with Luffy specifically and not with the Gum-Gum fruit is his airheadedness. This kid isn’t smart by any definition. He’s loyal, jolly, and determined, but an academic he is not. So, there have been numerous instances where Luffy ends up taking way more damage than he should in a fight simply because he isn’t thinking about how to counter their abilities. Basically, Luffy is the type of Pokemon Trainer to avoid using Non-Damaging Moves at all costs. Because of this, “touch of death” Devil Fruits such as the Hobi-Hobi No Mi are an awful matchup for him. All it takes is one touch against any of his stretched-out limbs and Luffy becomes a toy without any way to fight back and no one to remember him.

7 Urouge The Mad Monk’s Unnamed Devil Fruit

Next up is a pirate from the Worst Generation, the Mad Monk Urouge from one of the Sky Islands. Urouge’s Devil Fruit has yet to be named in the canon, but we’ve already been shown the basics of how it works. Essentially, any physical damage Urouge takes is then converted into raw power, expanding his muscles and overall size.

Of course, the natural counter to this is to use a damage type that doesn’t rely on “power” such as Kizaru’s laser beams. But, for Luffy, someone who exclusively depends on his muscles and strength, this Devil Fruit would work against him pretty whole handed-ly.

6 Bartholomew Kuma: Nikyu-Nikyu No Mi

One of the best examples in the series as to why Devil Fruits are such a fun concept is Bartholomew Kuma and his adorable paw pads. But, his ability is also one of Luffy’s strongest counters. The Paw-Paw Fruit might seem like a joke, but Kuma quickly proves that it’s not. This DF lets the user repel anything and everything that comes near it, even conceptual stuff, as long as it touches the paw pads on his hands. So, any of Luffy’s punches would get sent right back to him with double the force, even his Gear Fourth haymakers. And, if Kuma really didn’t even feel like giving him a chance in the first place, he could easily just repel Luffy down to the bottom of the sea. Can you even imagine if they added Kuma into One Piece Pirate Warriors 4? He’d be so overpowered.

5 “Iron Mace” Alvida: Sube-Sube No Mi

Moving on to another fruit like Sugar’s or Kuma’s that permanently changes the appearance of the wielder, the Sube-Sube No Mi. To put it simply, nothing can “hit” Alvida because it just slips off of her. Of course, this doesn’t apply to everything, as we saw when Smoker was able to restrain her with his Smoke. But, for Luffy, who once again commonly relies on Brute Force, all the benefits from his Gum-Gum Fruit would mean nothing up against this. And, unlike most of the aspects of DFs that Haki negates, it wouldn’t negate his punches slipping off of her smooth skin.

4 Inazuma: Choki-Choki No Mi

Now we’ve reached a character who shows up a bit later in the series, Inazuma. This member of the Revolutionary Army shows up during Luffy’s journey to save Ace from Impel Down. They’re the deputy commander serving under Emperor Ivankov, and they have the Choki-Choki No Mi, or the Snip Snip Fruit. Remember how we said the Gomu-Gomu No Mi’s biggest weakness is sharpness and cutting? Well, the Choki-Choki No Mi literally gives its user the ability to turn any part of their body into scissors that can cut through (seemingly) anything. With it, Inazuma has been shown to cut concrete, steel, and much more. Also, as a side note, it seems anything they cut can also be manipulated by them as if it was paper, which is also quite powerful. So, obviously, it would be rather easy to cut someone who had a body made of rubber, even if they were using Haki.

3 Giolla: Ato-Ato No Mi

The Ato-Ato No Mi is another one of those Devil Fruits where the fight is over as soon as the enemy falls for their trap. Basically, it allows Giolla, a member of the DonQuixote pirates, to transform anything or anyone into an abstract art rendition of themselves/itself. Frankly, they look like some of those hideous video game to cartoon adaptation characters like Mega Man or Donkey Kong.  It’s like a bizarre form of magic, but one that makes her more powerful than even some classic video game mages.

She’s used this power to render the Thousand Sunny immobile, to make Brooke’s sword and Chopper’s antlers useless, so it’s very likely she could use it to make Luffy unable to fight.

2 Diamante: Hira-Hira No Mi

Diamante is another member higher up on the food chain in the DonQuixote pirates. This villain is the one who runs the Coliseum, and also the one who put Rebecca through so much torture. He has the Hira-Hira No Mi, or Ripple Ripple Fruit, which lets him manipulate anything or anyone as if they were flags in the wind. It was never shown if Diamante could manipulate other people as if they were flags, or just himself. But, if he could, Luffy would be in even more trouble, since the bounciness of his Devil Fruit would be sort of ruined by this Devil Fruit.

1 “Scribe” Charlotte Mont-d’Or: Buku-Buku No Mi

Lastly, we’ve got yet another DF user who could “beat” the Gum-Gum fruit easily, Charlotte Mont-d’Or, one of Linlin’s many children in the Big Mom Pirates. This oddball has the Buku-Buku No Mi, another Paramecia Devil Fruit that lets him manipulate any and all books in many different ways. But, the main thing is that he can trap anyone or anything “inside” of books by pinning them down with seemingly indestructible nails. And, as we saw during the Whole Cake Island Arc, Luffy fell prey to this ability, hook line, and sinker.
