Overwatch gets 120fps support on Xbox Series X/S, but not PS5

Another upgrade on Microsoft’s machines that might not come to Sony’s new console.

You can now play Overwatch at 120fps on Xbox Series X/S.

The news comes as part of Blizzard’s March 9 patch for its hero shooter, with the games giant saying that it now allows users to choose from one of three graphics presets in the Preferred Mode menu. The Framerate option lets both Xbox Series X/S run Overwatch as 120 frames-per-second, but at a sacrifice to its resolution. The Xbox Series X will drop to a 1440p image when using this higher framerate option, while Xbox Series S has to go back to 1080p.

Blizzard has also introduced a Resolution mode, which allows Overwatch to prioritise a higher-resolution output, at the expensive of a slightly lower image quality. On the Series X, the title can hit 4K resolution, while Series S can manage 1440p.

Meanwhile, Balanced mode allows Overwatch to output a higher image quality, but with a lower resolution. Xbox Series X hits 1440p, with Series S landing at 1080p.

There’s no word on when Overwatch on PlayStation 5 will run at 120 frames-per-second. This is another title that has received a framerate upgrade on Xbox Series X and S but not on Sony’s new machine. Call of Duty: Warzone, for example, runs at 120fps on Xbox Series X, but this upgrade has not come to PS5.

Last year, Rocket League developer Psyonix said that to bring 120fps versions of PS4 games to Sony’s new machine required “full native port,” while for Xbox Series X/S it’s a “minor patch”.
