Marvel’s Avengers hasn’t had the best of starts since its launch last September. The game’s playerbase dropped off relatively quickly after launch, with users complaining that the title’s post-game grind was repetitive, tedious, and dull, while the subsequent Kate Bishop DLC didn’t exactly set the world ablaze either. However, for all the criticisms levied against the game, elements of its campaign still drew praise, particularly through the decision to let the loveable Kamala Khan take center stage.
Players were disheartened that they couldn’t revisit that original storyline after reaching the credits, yet, it seems Square Enix has reversed that decision through a new update. Version 1.5 will introduce several major changes to the Marvel’s Avengers experience on March 18, and one of these new additions will be the option to jump back to the start of the Avengers Reassemble campaign.
The announcement came during yesterday’s developer’s commentary stream, where Crystal Dynamics‘ Narrative Designer Hannah MacLeod and Community Manager Andy Wong discussed all things update 1.5. Included in that was the promise that the story mode will finally be replayable, with players having the option of returning to its 23 missions with all of their upgraded gear and abilities. It will essentially act as a New Game Plus, allowing players to experience The Avengers’ battle against AIM with the skins, powers, and skills they’ve accumulated since they first beat the campaign.
For those who never played Marvel’s Avengers, that tale follows the team splitting up after an event known as A-Day, in which they fail to stop a catastrophic event that results in thousands of civilians contracting superhuman powers and the death of Captain America. Picking up five years later, the team must reassemble to stop a corrupt mega-corporation known as AIM, which has taken over defending the world in the years since the Avengers disbanded. Along the way, the team goes up against a variety of iconic Marvel foes, including Abomination, Task Master, and MODOK.
Marvel’s Avengers version 1.5 will come with several other major features too, including a significant next-generation upgrade, customizable HARM rooms, and the Hawkeye DLC. The latter will expand Marvel’s Avengers story once again, seeing players assume the role of the skilled archer as they embark through a post-apocalyptic wasteland and battle an alternate-universe version of The Hulk known as Maestro. The update will be free and permanently adds Hawkeye to the roster, where he’ll join previous DLC addition Kate Bishop and the rest of the superhero crew.
Marvel’s Avengers is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions slated for March 18.
