Zack Snyder’s Justice League Contains Hidden Reference To Harley Quinn

It’s been known for quite some time now that Zack Snyder’s Justice League is more or less the end of the current version of the DC Film Universe. Going forward, fans will be able to expect massive shakeups to the cast, theme, and tone for future DC projects. In fact, the Snyder Cut itself is considered non-canon to the current DC continuity, acting more as a ‘what-if’ project that attempts to realize Snyder’s original vision for his phase of the DC Universe, though the new version of Justice League will still feature a few nods to other DCEU characters, including Harley Quinn.

That’s because Zack Snyder’s Justice League isn’t entirely disconnected from the previous films. In fact, the film seems to be one of the most ambitious crossovers in film, short of Marvel’s own Avengers titles. Just about every character from the DC Film saga is showing up, including multiple heroes, side characters, and even some brand new villains.

There is one face who has been absent from the celebration though. Despite Zack Snyder’s interest in bringing back anybody he can for the project, there has been a notable lack of attention on Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, who first appeared in Suicide Squad and has gone on to be one of Warner Bros.’ most beloved casting choices for the universe. In fact, Robbie’s version of Quinn was later given her own standalone film, Birds of Prey, with director Cathy Yan at the helm.

Furthermore, Robbie, alongside Gal Gadot, is one of the few DC Film stars to have been confirmed as continuing in their roles while the company begins recasting characters like Batman, Cyborg, and possibly Superman. Even though Robbie will continue on as Harley Quinn in director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and beyond, it seems a shame that she didn’t get invited to the final celebration that is the Snyder Cut.

However, that doesn’t mean Harley Quinn won’t have any representation. As many fans know by now, Jared Leto’s Joker is in the Snyder Cut courtesy of the director himself, and one fan noticed a very interesting detail at the Snyder Cut exhibit in Dallas.

When one looks very carefully at the costume for the Joker, they can see that he is actually carrying a small remembrance of Harley Quinn: her signature gun from Suicide Squad, complete with her stenciled initials. The question of why he has it will likely remain a mystery; at the very least it implies that Harley Quinn is no longer around for one reason or another. Still, at the very least it’s a nice nod to a character and film that would otherwise have very little connection to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and the fans who notice it are sure to appreciate the detail.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League releases March 18th on HBO Max.
