Ever since the release of Avengers: Endgame, fans have been speculating wildly about what the next phase of the MCU might look like, with theories abound about returning characters, new heroes and villains, and even speculation of an incoming multiverse. One of the more specific questions raised, however, was about Gwyneth Paltrow’s future in the MCU as Pepper Potts.
As most will remember, Tony Stark does not survive the events of Avengers: Endgame, sacrificing his life in order to use the Infinity Stones to stop Thanos once and for all. Before that, however, Pepper Potts, who typically doesn’t get involved in the fighting, showed up in an Iron Man suit of her own in order to help save the universe.
The suit she wore was a blue one specially made by Tony Stark in case of emergencies, and comic book fans immediately recognized it as the same suit Potts wears under the name of ‘Rescue’ in some Marvel continuities. Some fans wondered if this was a hint that Pepper Potts might be taking some of Tony’s responsibilities now that he is gone, or if Marvel would even go so far as to give her a standalone film of her own.
At the time though, Paltrow had expressed interest in stepping away from the superhero films for a while to focus on her own projects, and thus it seemed that Potts was to be quietly written out of the future films. In a recent interview with People, however, Paltrow has indicated that she would be willing to return under certain conditions.
Paltrow admitted that while she had a lot of success as an actress, she no longer felt passionate about the work, pivoting to focus on her beauty and wellness company Goop. She also suggested that if Marvel asked her to return for a small part or cameo role, she’d be willing to take up the character again: “I think if it was a small part that I could do in like a day or two, I would of course be open to that.”
So there it is: Pepper Potts likely won’t be returning to the MCU for anything other than small cameo appearances, perhaps not unlike her brief role in Spider-Man: Homecoming. While that doesn’t mean that Potts will never take up the mantle of Rescue full time, it does mean a full solo-film is likely off the table. Hopefully, something can be arranged that works for Paltrow’s schedule, as it would be nice to see the character one last time as a send-off to one of the MCU’s longest-standing characters.
Avengers: Endgame is now available on Disney Plus.
