Loop Hero seems like a simple game when players first start playing. The hero travels around the loop, gathering resources and fighting enemies. Upon reaching the campfire, players can decide to leave or risk another turn around the loop. As they defeat monsters, they get better loot, new tiles to make interesting combinations, and all manner of useful things to bring back to the camp.
Deep beneath the surface is a far more complex beast, filled with hidden mechanics and secrets that make Loop Hero a seriously addictive game. Traits are one such mechanic, and the Surveyor trait can be quite confusing when players first meet it in a game. The Surveyor trait describes that it gives “+0.5* loop HP for an adjacent road-side tile while passing,” but this isn’t exactly the clearest explanation.
What it actually means is that anytime the hero passes a structure that has been placed on the loop, they will recover a small amount of HP. This can be extremely beneficial in the late game when the loop is covered with structures because moving in any tile with a structure on it will heal the hero.
Combining this with Mountain Peaks to improve the hero’s overall health pool, daily regeneration from Meadows and Blooming Meadows, and other healing sources such as Vampirism or health potions can ensure the most possible healing for the hero at any given moment. For long runs designed to gather up vast amounts of resources, this is an essential tactic.
The best thing about this loop HP effect is that it will passively heal the hero based on the number of tiles that are down on the loop, so the busier the run, the more benefit for the hero. This removes some of the risks of trying to fill the loop with enemy-generating tiles. It also doesn’t matter what class of hero is on the loop, they will still benefit from the additional healing.
Best of all, it makes it much easier to finish loops with full health, setting players up to fight the boss at any time they wish. Loop Hero is a game where players need to constantly weigh the benefits or risks of their decisions. On the one hand, placing more tiles makes the loop more dangerous, but the healing from those tiles could mean the difference between a successful run or dying somewhere on the loop.
