There’s a lot to love about Avatar: The Last Airbender. It has a gripping story, a fascinating fantasy world, beautiful animations and music, and superb voice acting. All of these qualities come together to create an unforgettable saga.

They also come together to create some of the most endearing characters ever seen in a cartoon show. Many of these characters excite the fans, and some make them even cry at times. And then there are others that make fans laugh out loud. Of the show’s surprisingly long list of funny characters, every fan would agree that it is Sokka who the best at getting them to laugh the most and the hardest.

10 “I’m Just A Guy Who Likes Comedy.”

Sokka knows who he is, and he is comfortable with it. He’s a simple guy who knows how to enjoy life, a fact made evident by his constant jokes and sarcasm. And he knows how to use his humor to annoy people, but in a good way.

That’s what fans saw as Sokka explained who he was to an actor who was playing Sokka in a play that depicted the events of Team Avatar’s journey. He was a fan of what the actor was doing, but he knew there could be more to it, which is why Sokka donated a few quality jokes for the actor to deliver while on stage.

9 “Always The Optimist.”

Sokka is funny, but he’s also practical and sometimes, even a bit of a pessimist. This is why Aang’s overbearing exuberance can wear thin on Sokka from time to time. He doesn’t always share Aang’s ability to find the good in a situation.

The situation in question for this quote was when Team Avatar was being chased by unknown people riding inside of an all-terrain vehicle. It was clear that they were hunting the group, but Aang still had the thought that they might be friendly. Sokka, of course, couldn’t bring himself to share the same hopefulness and defaulted to his trademark sarcasm.

8 “Hey, We’re In Enemy Territory. Those Are Enemy Birds.”

Another trait to add to Sokka’s personality is cautiousness. His frantic attitude has had a history of getting him into trouble, so he’s learned to keep an eye for danger. The problem is that he can get a bit too worried about the wrong stuff.

The paranoia is clear when Sokka considers even the birds living in the Fire Nation as potential dangers. He might be trying to make a joke, but there’s is just as equal of a chance that he was being serious. One can never be certain when it comes to Sokka and the things he’s afraid of. At the end of the day, he just wants to ensure that he can protect his friends and family and that they survive this ordeal.

7 “The Universe Just Loves Proving Me Wrong, Doesn’t It?”

As Toph so perfectly answered: “You make it too easy.” It’s easy to poke fun at Sokka’s pessimistic tendencies, but when life makes things difficult for him on almost a daily basis, it becomes easy to understand where he’s coming from.

That was the case when he and his friends were trying to escape from the Fire Nation while aboard a stolen Fire Nation ship. If it was bad enough that they had been discovered and were being pursued by their enemies, they also had to deal with the surprise arrival of a massive, angry, and hungry sea serpent that was looking to attack every ship in the area.

6 “What Does The Cabbage Merchant Use To Fix His Cabbages? A Cabbage Patch!”

Going back to the appreciation of comedy, this was the first joke that Sokka offered to the actor. Not only is Sokka of master of sarcasm, but he’s also adept at delivering quality puns. The actor agreed, which is why he did end up incorporating a few of them into his performance.

For the rest of the performance, Sokka was free to sit back and enjoy the rare opportunity to laugh at his own jokes as someone else told them. Though, his friends probably didn’t take too kindly to listening to them, since they hear them all the time already.

5 “Oh No! I Knew It Was Only A Matter Of Time! Appa Ate Momo!”

Sometimes, Sokka can miss key or obvious details, and his dramatic reactions make for a fun time. That’s what happened when Aang and his pet flying lemur, Momo, disappeared without a trace. Sokka, with the outrageous thought process that he has, assumed the worst, with the worst being that Appa ate Momo.

None of Sokka’s friends are sure as to why he thought it was only a matter of time before Appa, a bison, would eat Momo, but they knew there wasn’t any point in trying to figure out Sokka’s rationale. They just pointed out that Momo was probably with Aang and moved on.

4 “It’s Pretty Much My Whole Identity. Sokka, The Meat And Sarcasm Guy.”

Again, Sokka is a man who is aware of who he is. He’s never tried to be anything more than a simple man with simple interests. And meat and sarcasm are definitely at the top of those lists of interests.

The shame was when one of these great loves of his tricked him and the other was useless to him. While hunting some small game, Sokka got trapped in a pit. The little creature stuck around to mess with Sokka, and its inability to understand Sokka made his attempts to ridicule it futile.

3 “That’s Called Sokka Style. Learn It.”

Sokka doesn’t take too kindly to people who mock him, especially when they are mocking his intelligence. He might not have a perfect retort for them right away, but if he ever sees a chance to make a comeback, he’s not going to hesitate.

That’s what happened when Sokka was given the chance to take his revenge on the ancient spirit, Wan Shi Tong. The massive spirit owl had rudely questioned Sokka’s intellect when they first met, and that’s all Sokka needed in order to grow and hold a grudge. Once the opportunity came to deliver a condescending comment of his own, Sokka took it.

2 “Who Lit Toph On Fire?”

Despite being so cautious and always wanted to formulate plans for everything, Sokka can still end up doing some dumb and impulsive things. The best example of this would be his questionable decision to drink the juice from an unknown cactus plant in the middle of the desert. He had no idea if the liquid inside the plant was just water, and learned the hard way that it wasn’t.

The delirium Sokka experienced was a sight for his friends to behold. He had no idea where he was, who he was, or what was going on. And apparently, he thought his friends had some incredibly wild hairdos.

1 “I’m Just A Guy, With A Boomerang. I Didn’t Ask For All This Flying And Magic!”

It’s apparently an ongoing pattern for Sokka to reflect on who he is. This self-description came in the show’s second episode, and it helped make it clear to everyone just how out of his element Sokka was with all of the benders and their crazy abilities.

It was also the start of poor Sokka’s long history of taking a lot of abuse from the benders and the elements. From this point on, he’d be running, ducking, and jumping out of the way of rocks, ice, and fire blasts on a regular basis.
