Since there is rarely massive innovation between iteration of sports games, the minor tweaks and corrections made between releases can make all the difference. MLB The Show 21 promises to address key concerns around hitting and pitching that their fanbase raised with their last year’s release.
Fans’ problems were primarily with the fundamental aspects of the game, namely hitting, pitching, and fielding. Ramone Russell, Brand Strategist and Product Development Communicator at PlayStation, sat down to give players a brief overview of how these mechanics would be affected in the upcoming release. This comes on the heels of an exciting announcement regarding the Stadium Creator implemented into MLB The Show 21.
During the humorous segment, Russell promised what they are calling a “complete fielding overhaul.” With the focus for MLB The Show 21 being narrowed in on “at-the-wall” plays, players that previously struggled to rob home runs at the wall or found that their players were not properly fielding balls near the edges of the field should now be satisfied. If a player’s skill was the underlying issue, they can now look forward to an entirely revamped fielding tutorial so that they are properly equipped with the tools necessary to make clutch plays. Finally, Russell revealed that they added new jump and diving indicators to help players time the exact moment they need to make a move.
With a revamped post-season mode in MLB The Show 21 aimed at quicker sessions, fans can expect a more intuitive, smooth experience overall. For now, skeptics will have to wait to see if the experience offered in the demo testing translates to the official release.
MLB The Show 21 will release April 20 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
