Robert MacCready, known best by his last name MacCready, first appeared in Fallout 3, but despite being just a child, he was the mayor of Little Lamplight, a settlement operated solely by kids under the age of 16. While the fate of Little Lamplight is unknown, MacCready reappears as an important character and potential companion in Fallout 4.
Backstory is essential to determining a companion’s likes and dislikes in Fallout 4, and MacCready has one of the saddest. (Spoilers) After having a son, Duncan, with the woman he loved, the sight of Lucy being torn apart by ghouls haunts him. Now, after deciding to clean up his act and be a better father, MacCready is in search of a cure for Duncan after he contracted a strange disease. MacCready copes with his rough history through heavy-handed sarcasm, and many Fallout 4 fans theorize MacCready suffers from some form of depression due to his past and struggles.
The easiest way to increase MacCready’s affinity levels in Fallout 4 is by picking locks. As a morally gray person, MacCready is attracted to actions that point to looking out for oneself while also not being nice or mean others, possibly due to his distrust of other people. His easiest likes to hit are stealing and lockpicking, but MacCready also likes when the Sole Survivor is violent to others and when they perform actions that help the Minutemen.
Interestingly, MacCready rolls over some character traits from Fallout 3, where he had high charisma checks needed to get into Little Lamplight. In Fallout 4, MacCready enjoys when the Sole Survivor passes speech checks, but only when that means lying, threatening, or asking for more money.
After getting MacCready to maximum affinity in Fallout 4, the Sole Survivor will gain the perk Killshot, which gives the player an increased accuracy for headshots in V.A.T.S. by 20%. The player can also romance MacCready in Fallout 4.
Possibly an ode to his goal to be a better father as a promise to his son, MacCready dislikes if the Sole Survivor suffers from addiction, which can be a nuisance if the player uses a lot of chems in combat. He might be one of the most finicky companions when it comes to dialogue options as he dislikes when the Sole Survivor chooses nice, mean, or peaceful routes. Since Fallout 3, MacCready enjoys violent solutions. Donating items and murdering will also lower MacCready’s affinity level.
If the player steals from certain locations, such as the VIP room of the Third Rail, and gets caught, or commands MacCready to steal items in Goodneighbor, he will become hostile and leave the player’s company.
Fallout 4 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
