PS5 Exclusive Returnal Details Creepy Online Feature | Game Rant

Housemarque is best known for its work on shoot ’em up games like the PS4 launch title Resogun and the Super Stardust series. However, it’s set to release a much larger-scale game on the PlayStation 5 next month in the form of Returnal, a third-person sci-fi shooter game with roguelike and horror elements. Returnal looks like it will be Housemarque’s most ambitious game to date, and recently, some new details on what it will entail were revealed by narrative director Greg Louden.

While presenting a new Returnal story trailer, which heavily emphasized the game’s horror elements, Louden also talked about one of the game’s online features. While Returnal does not have online multiplayer in the typical sense, it does have online elements. Apparently, as players are making their way through the game world, they will sometimes find a corpse of the main character Selene, which makes sense as part of the game’s gimmick is that Selene’s deaths and revivals are part of the story.

However, it turns out that the Selene corpses in Returnal can be interacted with. Sometimes players will get audio logs from them, but other times they will get to see how that Selene died – and as it turns out, these corpses are showing the actual deaths of other Returnal players. This feature sounds similar to the Dark Souls games, which allow players to touch bloodstains to see how other players bit the dust in any given area.

The twist in Returnal is that it allows players to “avenge” the fallen Selenes that they find. How exactly this plays out was not revealed, so it seems those interested in Returnal will have to keep their fingers crossed for another info drop or they may have to wait until they actually get their hands on the game on April 30 to find out for sure.

Meanwhile, Louden also revealed some other interesting details about Returnal, touching on the game’s first-person horror elements. There are segments in Returnal where Selene walks through a creepy-looking house, which makes the game swap to a first-person view. As is the case with the online mechanics, the developers are keeping most of the details about Returnal‘s first-person moments secret for the time-being, but the trailers shown so far have given off serious PT vibes. Whether or not it leans that hard into horror remains to be seen, but fans will find out when Returnal‘s release date rolls around next month.

Returnal launches April 30, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
