Kevin Feige Shuts Down Rumor Of Chris Evans’ Captain America Returning

Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and The Winter Soldier starts streaming this Friday on Disney Plus, and in preparation for its release Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige sat down to discuss the upcoming series. When asked about the rumor claiming actor Chris Evans would be returning to the role of Captain America sometime in the future, Feige appears to shoot down the possibility.

In January, it was reported that Evans would be returning to the role of super-soldier-turned-Avenger Steve Rogers, a.k.a Captain America, possibly in a smaller supporting role akin to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in Spider-Man Homecoming. Evans reacted to the Captain America rumor quickly, simply tweeting, “News to me.” Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Feige said, “I rarely answer no to anything anymore because things are always surprising me with what happens, but that rumor, I think, was dispelled rather quickly by the man himself.”

In the interview, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan were also asked about the rumors. Mackie, who plays Captain America’s partner and fellow Avenger Sam Wilson, a.k.a. The Falcon, said he had “no idea” with regards to what was going on with Evans. Mackie said that the man who has been selling him bait for twenty years broke the news to him while he was fishing. Talking to EW, Mackie said, “Marvel’s so secretive, and it’s so ridiculous about what we know and what we don’t know, I have no idea. The dude at the dock selling me shrimp knows more about what’s going on with Marvel than I do.”

Sebastian Stan, who’s reprising the role of Captain America’s best friend Bucky Barnes,  a.k.a the Winter Soldier, also weighed in, saying, “Anything is possible, right?” Stan alluded to the importance of Evans’ Captain America, telling EW, “I feel like you can’t ever think of the words ‘Captain America’ without thinking about Chris Evans. He’s done such an amazing job with it, and I feel like he’s always going to have this presence. And he has a presence in our show.” So, it looks like there is little validity to this report, but as Stan says, anything is possible. Marvel is known for being notoriously tight-lipped, even with its main stars.

The last time audiences saw  Evans’ Captain America was in the 3-hour Infinity Saga finale, Avengers: Endgame. At the end of the film, Steve Rogers was tasked with returning the infinity stones to their proper places in the timeline but decided to stay behind in the past and make a life for himself with his one true love, Peggy Carter. Cap’s two best friends Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes are reunited with an elderly retired Captain America, who then passes his famous Vibranium shield on to Wilson, hoping that one day his fellow Avenger will take up the mantle.

Here we have the concept for the new series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where it looks like Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes will have to team up to fight ongoing threats in the absence of Steve Rogers. Based on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier trailers, it seems like Wilson will have a hard time trying to adjust to his role as the new Captain America, especially when his own government doest agree with the decision.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier premieres on March 19th, 2021.
