‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ Fan Expectations Have Chris Hemsworth Nervous

Chris Hemsworth is currently filming the highly-anticipated film Thor: Love and Thunder in his native country, Australia. The MCU star recently revealed the unique challenges that the fourth installment of the Thor franchise presents.

Thor: Ragnarok premiered in 2017 and was largely considered to be the best Thor film to date. The blockbuster was praised for its wittiness and dazzling action sequences. Marvel made a concerted effort to change the tone of the Thor franchise and showcase the comedic side of its titular star. Hemsworth previously stated that while he was happy with the second Thor film, it didn’t provide opportunities to be funny. The Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) directed film grossed over $850 million worldwide on a $180 million budget.

The New Zealand-born filmmaker is currently directing Thor: Love and Thunder. Last year, Waititi revealed that the upcoming sequel will draw inspiration from the Mighty Thor comic books. The film is expected to see Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster become the Mighty Thor and gain similar powers to the former king of Asgard. Portman last played Foster in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World. The large ensemble cast of Love and Thunder includes Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Dave Bautista as Drax, and Karen Gillen as Nebula.

Last year, Oscar Award-winning actor Christian Bale signed on to play the villainous Gorr the God Butcher. In the comics, Gorr has superhuman strength and the ability to shape-shift and camouflage. After his mother and children die, Gorr strives to kill every god that exists. Fans were caught off guard by the casting announcement because The Dark Knight star previously stated that he’d never seen a single Avengers film or any superhero film aside from Christopher Reeve’s Superman movies while also indicating that he had no interest in returning to the genre at the time.

While details of Love and Thunder have been kept under wraps, Thompson has said the script is both humorous and touching. Meanwhile, Hemsworth told GQ Australia that he is motivated to make an even better film than Ragnarok. “There’s that same – if not more – pressure now to do that again,” says the star. “So there’s a little bit of exciting nervous energy that is motivating all of us to reach a little further and make sure we’re covering all bases and approaching the scene from every angle.”

Following Love & Thunder, Hemsworth is expected to start filming George Miller’s Mad Max spinoff film, Furiosa. The highly anticipated film will explore Furiosa’s origins and backstory, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing a younger version of Charlize Theron’s Furiosa.

Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in theatres on May 6, 2022.
