Earlier this month, director Julian Terry showed off his ambitious horror short Don’t Peek at SXSW Online, with the film centering around an evil entity interacting with a victim through Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It’s now been reported by Deadline that the project will be adapted into a feature-length film, with Timur Bekmambetov set to helm the project.
Best known for his work on 2008’s high-concept, time-bending assassin flick Wanted and later 2015’s unique, first-person sci-fi action film Hardcore Henry, Bekmambetov brings a lot of industry experience to the project. Alongside the director, the project will also boast Majd Nassif in a producer role and Pavel Bozhkov as a creative executive.
For those who didn’t catch the creepy short film, Don’t Peek follows a young woman that discovers the world of Animal Crossing is somehow bleeding into her own. Although the bizarre phenomenon is initially harmless, manifesting in drawers opening and shutting when they’re used in-game, she quickly begins to realize that these events are far from as innocuous as they first seemed. Before long, the girl encounters a sinister character lurking in her Animal Crossing home, begging her to let him free. The entire movie was devised during the pandemic and launched on YouTube back in October.
The short film is the next in a long line of horror releases for Julian Terry, who’s currently in the process of adapting another of his short films into a feature-length project. Titled Whisper, that film also blends technology and the supernatural, focusing on an Amazon Echo that registers the sounds of a malevolent entity lurking in a woman’s home.
Whisper’s adaptation will be helmed by Terry himself, while the film will be distributed by Amblin Pictures and the script will be penned by Bryce McGuire. The ambitious young horror director clearly has an eye for the macabre, creating an array of inventive, creepy shorts which can be viewed over on his YouTube channel.
Although the game itself is the polar opposite of the genre, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have attempted to weave horror into the title ever since its debut last year. Back in June, one player created an entire horror film within the game, while another designed outfits yanked straight from Ari Aster’s Midsommar. Someone even created Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride in the title, proving the community behind the latest entry in the series can make just about anything with enough time and ambition.
