The development studio behind the hit 2013 indie game Guacamelee has a brand-new game in works, to be announced at the upcoming Xbox Indie Showcase on March 26.
Having released to high critical acclaim, Guacamelee became a cult-classic Metroidvania game even among non-platformer gamers with the biggest complaint being that it was too short. It was later nominated for the Excellence in Visual Art award at the 2013 Independent Games Festival. Its sequel Guacamelee 2 became strongly recommended among indie players for couch co-op, where players can explore its many secrets with a buddy instead of solo. In between the two releases, developer DrinkBox created an action-adventure game called Severed, which also garnered many positive reviews.
And among over 100 other titles being shown such as the Xbox exclusive STALKER 2, DrinkBox has said it plans on showing a “brand new game” during Xbox’s Indie Showcase next week. DrinkBox clarified on Twitter that the game isn’t another Guacamelee sequel but rather something completely new, and fans of the indie studio are getting amped up over the news. Further information will have to wait until next week.
Following various leaks and rumors about the Xbox event, Microsoft revealed that the showcase would be centered around indie games. This news comes shortly after PlayStation had its own spotlight on indie games, where it announced a handful coming to PlayStation consoles including Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, Chicory: A Colorful Tale, and Heavenly Bodies.
It looks like both of the gaming giants aim to incorporate and support more indie titles and studios moving forward.
Guacamelee 2 is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
