Respawn Suggests Major Loot Changes Coming to Apex Legends

Last month, Apex Legends brought back its Locked and Loaded Limited Time Mode during the Anniversary Collection Event. Many players loved the improved loot pool present in that LTM and have been asking for that loot pool to permanently be implemented into regular Apex matches. Respawn’s Lead Designer has now suggested that those players may very well get what they have been asking for, or at least part of it.

When playing Locked and Loaded in Apex Legends, all players start with a Mozambique shotgun with a bolt and sight, 2 shield cells, 2 syringes, a helmet, a body shield, a knockdown shield, and a backpack, all of which are level 1. The loot that can be found in bins and on the ground is then all level 2 or better. The mode also sees higher spawn rates for the red care package weapons and gold fully kitted weapons.

Compared to starting with no loot at the start of the match, many players fell in love with the mode and began to ask that this improved loot pool become permanent in Apex Legends. In response to the popular request on Reddit, Lead Game Designer at Respawn Entertainment Daniel Klein said that the developer is carefully considering making the Locked and Loaded loot pool permanent, but with a few caveats. Klein says that he and his team of designers are trying to consider how such a drastic change to the early-game moments of an Apex match could affect the game long term.

While in the short term Locked and Loaded made early gameplay for matches more exciting and fun for many, Klein says that making these changes permanent could have unforeseen consequences like the game becoming overall too aggressive, or even less aggressive if lots of players are satisfied with their early loot and decide to camp. Klein says that these kinds of long-term consequences can be hard to predict. If something like one of the aforementioned problems does arise, simply reverting Apex back to its current state of starting with no loot won’t be an option after so long a time, as that change would feel even worse.

But Klein did reveal that he and Respawn are currently thinking that players starting with a level 1 helmet, body shield, and knockdown shield would be “probably fine.” Klein says that body shields would probably still spawn on the ground though, and didn’t mention players starting with Mozambiques, so it seems like only part of the Locked and Loaded event could become permanent. But starting with full armor every match would be a significant shakeup to how Apex is played, and it seems to be a change many players want to see.

In other Apex news, a new comic book series was announced this week to be published by Dark Horse. The Apex Legends: Overtime comic will be written by veteran Respawn writer Jesse Stern and feature art from multiple artists who have worked on comics by both DC and Marvel.

Apex Legends also recently released on the Nintendo Switch, though the performance of the game leaves a lot to be desired. Not only is the framerate sometimes less than half of what it is on other consoles, but the dynamic resolution makes fighting targets at a distance rather difficult.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
