The latest patch for the Viking RPG Valheim is out and it looks like Greydwarf farming won’t ever be the same. Among the major changes in patch 0.148.6, is that campfires, bonfires, and hearths take damage as they deal damage, making the farms that players have set up by placing these near Greydwarf spawns less functional.
Valheim remains in Early Access but has received glowing reviews in its just over month-long lifespan and reached over 6 million units sold. This is the second patch/update in March brought about by the game’s developers Iron Gate Studio.
Important pieces of this update include a bump to the reinforced chest inventory from 18 total storage slots to 24, all boss drops now will float on water, Deathsquito and Drake trophy drop rates have increased and the Harpoon no longer works on bosses. Along with those adjustments is an attempt to make the taming of night-spawning wolves easier. From now on they should be less likely to try and run away or despawn after taming has begun. On top of gameplay tweaks such as those mentioned above, this patch took time to improve network bandwidth handling (the game should work better with low bandwidth connections) and better detect bad connections.
The focus of this patch was on tweaking gameplay and some common network bugs but what players will most likely remember is the change to Greydwarf farming. Now that campfires, bonfires, and hearths will take damage as they deal it, players will have to stand by and repair their respective Greydwarf-burning choice as it farms for them instead of being able to wander off while it works.
This series of fixes and adjustments should be just what players are looking for despite its negative effect on Greydwarf farming and is a sign that Valheim should only get better as more patches come out. The increase in the storage capacity of the reinforced chest is a subtle but needed improvement and the developer’s adjustment with the taming of wolves should be appreciated by all looking for a canine companion in-game. Players don’t have any reason to doubt the development team who have created a strong early candidate for game-of-the-year and patches such as 0.148.6 should be approached optimistically.
But with thousands of positive reviews already on Steam, Valheim doesn’t have too many issues holding it back. Sometimes too many fixes can take away from the character of a game and, though this probably isn’t the case with this patch, things can go downhill quickly. Adjustments to simple things such as a use delay on the hammer, hoe and cultivator detailed in the patch can approach fixing something that isn’t broken.
