Dwayne Johnson Gives DC Fans A Sneak Peek At The ‘Black Adam’ Script

In a recent social media post, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that his Black Adam movie is finally set to go into production. Originally scheduled to begin filming in August 2020, the Black Adam shoot had to be pushed back to accommodate the coronavirus pandemic. The character was originally set to make his debut in 2019’s Shazam!, but DC’s powers that be decided to save the introduction of the Rock’s supervillain role for his own movie.

Johnson signed on to play Black Adam way back in 2014 when there was no DC Extended Universe to speak of beyond Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel. Now that Black Adam is finally getting made, the Snyder-verse is a thing of the past and Warner Bros. is charging forward with a new incarnation of DCEU, so it’s unclear how Black Adam will fit into the wider franchise.

Over an Instagram video featuring the cover page of Black Adam’s shooting script, Johnson announced, “We are approximately three weeks away from shooting Black Adam and I can’t believe we are at the finish line with this thing. And what a journey it has been. Actually, I can believe it, considering how hard we’ve worked over the years.” The post was captioned with lyrics from the Johnny Cash hit “The Man in Black.”

In addition to telling the title character’s origin story, Black Adam will introduce the Justice Society of America to the DCEU. Noah Centineo has been cast to play Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge has been cast to play Hawkman, and Quintessa Swindell has been cast to play Cyclone. Doctor Fate is also confirmed to appear in the film, but the actor playing him has yet to be confirmed. The initial script was written by Adam Sztykiel, but that draft has been revised by The Mauritanian’s Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.

Black Adam will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who recently directed Johnson in the Disney adventure movie Jungle Cruise, which is set to hit theaters on July 30 (but we’ll see). Based on the Disney theme park ride of the same name, Jungle Cruise also stars Emily Blunt as a scientist who enlists the help of a riverboat captain, played by Johnson, in the search for a tree with healing powers.

Although it was initially slated to be released in December 2021, Black Adam is currently undated. It’s possible that Johnson and co. are waiting to get a clearer idea of the post-pandemic world before committing to another official date. As fans of James Bond, Dom Toretto, and Black Widow can attest to, endless delays of highly anticipated movies are no fun. In the meantime, DC fans can enjoy Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max.

Black Adam will be released on a yet-to-be-announced date.
