Why The Sims 4 Bunk Beds Had a Rocky Start | Game Rant

A few days ago, The Sims fans got a base game update to The Sims 4 that added bunk beds to the game. The patch also came with personality trait improvements, graphics fixes for console players, and some updated base game hairstyles. Many fans were excitedly awaiting this day, as bunk beds have been a highly sought-after item in The Sims 4. While most players were pleased by the addition of bunk beds, not everyone was impressed. The issue lies in the fact that the bunk beds in The Sims 4 don’t function the same way as those included in The Sims 3: Generations.

Bunk beds and lofted beds allow players a creative way to save space, especially when playing in a small home. However, some people were unimpressed with the aesthetic look of the bunk beds as well as their functionality. Bunk beds may have been met with a semi-lukewarm reception, but they still function very well in-game. Besides, there are workarounds for those who want to use the lofted beds in a different manner than the game allows at this point in time.

In The Sims 3: Generations, bunk beds were available in build/buy mode as both regular bunk beds or lofted beds. When the bed was lofted, the empty space underneath could be used to slot a ton of different items in there. Desks with computers and chairs, a dresser, maybe even a bookcase all fit underneath without fear of if the Sim would be able to use it. The slotting was part of the object’s design, so Sims already had a route to use the items placed under the bed.

One bonus of the bunk beds in The Sims 4 is that they didn’t require an expansion, game, or stuff pack purchase in order to access them. They were given as a free base game update so all players could enjoy them. However, the metal frame style bunk bed was based on a bed that originally came with the Parenthood game pack, which has now been added to the base game. Some players were unhappy that a bed they had to pay to get access to has now been released for free. On the other hand, the bed isn’t really the main appeal of the Parenthood pack, so it might not be that big of a deal.

Bunk beds in The Sims 4 have two different frame styles — wood and metal. Either one works well depending on the style of the room, though some players were unhappy with how the styles were rendered. The bigger issue, though, is how nothing else slots under the lofted bed organically. The only thing that slots underneath the loft as of right now is either another single bed or a toddler bed. Given the precedent set by The Sims 3: Generations, it’s unsurprising that some players are unhappy with the limitations of The Sims 4’s bunk beds.

There are workarounds for this issue, though. Many players have done trial and error placement to see what bookcases, dressers, or desks fit under the bed when the Move Objects cheat is on. This cheat allows for free placement of anything in-game, but players need to be mindful when using it. Otherwise, they may create an aesthetically pleasing house that doesn’t function. Players have tested which items fit underneath and keep the objects and bed usable, so it may take some tricky placement, but other items can fit under the lofted bed.

Though there’s been no confirmation that a future update is coming for bunk beds, it’s possible that the developer could change the coding of the beds to accommodate other items below. Until then, players can always turn the Move Objects cheat on and create a custom below-bed setup.

The Sims 4 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
