Few anime worlds are as expansive and creative as Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece. After over 20 years, this anime continues to enthrall fans with an expansive library of characters and abilities. One of the oldest adversaries in the series, Crocodile, is known for his sand-based Suna Suna no Mi logia fruit. He’s able to transform into and control sand, an ability that lets him rule over the desert kingdom of Alabasta for years.
This former Warlord is powerful, but there are plenty of Devil Fruits that can counter his abilities. When paired against the right enemy, Crocodile is in for an uphill battle. Here are several fruits that are designed to counter the Suna Suna no Mi.
10 Daifuku: Hoya Hoya No Mi
One of the biggest strengths of Crocodile’s Suna Suna no Mi is his ability to drain the liquid out of the bodies of those he touches. This power is moot when paired with Daifuku’s Hoya Hoya no Mi. When Daifuku rubs his stomach, he summons a genie that attacks and defends for him. It’s an effective mid-rand ability that allows Daifuku to keep a distance from his foes while the genie destroys his opponent. Paired with Haki, it boasts attacks that will negate Crocodile’s Logia advantage.
9 Enel: Goro Goro No Mi
The Hoya Hoya no Mi provides a circumstantial advantage against Crocodile, but other Logias pose a natural counter to Crocodile as well. Enel is one of these natural counters. When sand is hit by lightning, and its temperature rises above 3272 degrees Fahrenheit, it can transform sand into silica glass. Enel could effectively shatter Crocodile after a concentrated lightning strike. Neither Enel nor Crocodile have used Armament Haki, but with such a stark contrast in strengths, Enel wouldn’t need it to defeat the would-be tyrant.
8 Kuzan: Hie Hie No Mi
Another natural counter to the Suna Suna no Mi would be that of the former Admiral, Kuzan. With the ability to turn into ice, manifest, and control the substance, Kuzan could use his sub-zero temperatures to freeze Crocodile’s sand. When sand is frozen, it’s far harder to mold and move, which would make transforming and using abilities difficult for Crocodile.
It wouldn’t take much for Kuzan to freeze Crocodile, as sand freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Considering that’s the starting point for ice, it’s easy to imagine Kuzan can drop far below that temperature. Even ignoring that Kuzan is one of the strongest Devil Fruit users in the series, it’s hard to imagine Crocodile walking away from this fight unscathed.
7 Brook: Yomi Yomi No Mi
While the next fruit on this list may not inherently be a direct counter to Crocodile, its user’s mastery of it makes him a natural enemy of the Suna Suna no Mi. Soul King Brook is one of few characters impervious to the moisture-draining abilities that Crocodile possesses. Without fluids to drain, Brook would be unphased by this former Warlord. He can also summon chills from the Underworld for freezing attacks that would deal damage, much like Kuzan’s attacks.
6 Sabo: Mera Mera No Mi
Sand be impeded in a multitude of ways. One of the sand’s natural enemies is heat. When sand hits 3090 degrees Fahrenheit, it melts. Once the sand solidifies again, it’ll turn into glass. If Crocodile were to ever face off against Sabo, the Mera Mera no Mi user, his powers would hinder him more than anything. Because Sabo can control fire, conjure it, and manipulate the element, he’d be able to turn Crocodile to jelly, literally. Even without his masterful Haki, this revolutionary could eviscerate this opposing Logia user.
5 Smoker: Moku Moku No Mi
Part of the power of the Suna Suna no Mi comes from its ability to drain the moisture from its enemies, but Crocodile can also fashion blades, tornadoes, and weapons from the substance. These abilities are useless in the face of an enemy without a physical body to make contact with.
With Vice Admiral Smoker as his opponent, Crocodile wouldn’t be able to land a single scratch. This marine’s body is incorporeal, meaning that he’s a poor match for this law-abiding sailor. While there’s no telling if Smoker’s attacks would be effective on Crocodile, Smoker could certainly settle for a draw at the least.
4 Marshall D. Teach: Yami Yami No Mi
One of One Piece‘s most powerful Devil Fruits is Marshall D. Teach’s Yami Yami No Mi. This Emporer has shown that his fruit can negate the powers of all that he comes in contact with. With just one touch, Teach can negate any Devil Fruit while still commanding his own abilities.
The moment Blackbeard makes contact with his enemy, the fight can end. With such a dishonorable pirate like Blackbeard, it’s not unthinkable that he’d have his crew land a few shots while he held his opponent down.
3 Caesar Clown: Gasu Gasu No Mi
One of the first adversaries Luffy went up against in the New World was the twisted scientist Caesar Clown. This Logia user would have been impossible for Luffy to defeat without Haki. Like Smoker, his Devil Fruit allows him to create a body that isn’t solid. Unlike Smoker, this scientist can weaponize his body and the air around him to deal with Crocodile quickly. Whether he removes the oxygen from the air, emits a poisonous gas, or ignites unstable gasses to cause an explosion, Caesar would toy with Crocodile as he dismantled him for an experiment.
2 Borsalino: Pika Pika No Mi
Another admiral that would make light work of Crocodile is Borsalino, better known as Kizaru. This marine’s Pika Pika no Mi allows him to control and transform into light. He can shoot beams of the concentrated energy at speeds faster than the eye can process, conjure swords to tear his enemies apart or rain the substance down from above in a shower of energy. This attack emits a heat strong enough to tear through the human body in an instant, which hints at the fact that it’d be hot enough to melt glass much like fire can. In that scenario, Crocodile would be down before he knew what had happened.
1 Marco: Tora Tora No Mi Model: Phoenix
If the Mera Mera no Mi is the natural enemy of Crocodile, Marco the Phoenix is its worst nightmare. His Tora Tora no Mi Model: Phoenix is a Mythological Zoan fruit, granting him the ability to turn into the flaming bird from legends, a Phoenix. Like the flaming bird, he can transform into fire, fly, control the substance and even regenerate. So on the off chance that Crocodile could hurt him, he’d immediately heal. It’s easily one of the most powerful Devil Fruits in the franchise and one that Crocodile should do his best to steer clear of.
