Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has seen its open-world Zombies mode Outbreak become a major success, and Treyarch seems to be wasting no time adding fresh content to the mode. Starting tomorrow, the first new Outbreak region will be making its debut in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
The map should look familiar to fans of Fireteam Dirty Bomb, as none other than Sanatorium will be getting taken over by hordes of Zombies. The map will also have a nighttime setting, making it the first Outbreak location to not be set during the day. While it is unclear if other Outbreak regions will get nighttime variants as well, players can expect Sanatorium to be a bit darker than the usual setting. While a new map is exciting, players can also expect to see a few new things in this region as well.
Treyarch has provided details on the Outbreak objective that is being added with this new map, as a mission type called Secure should freshen things up a bit. In the mode, players will need to “secure essence from the undead” using a special device that is called down from space. Players will need to stand near these devices, racking up kills as the hordes of Zombies approach them. For longtime fans of the mode, this style of objective should be familiar.
However, one thing that makes Secure a bit different from the Dragon feeding Easter egg or the Origins’ soul boxes is what the canisters do to help the player. The essence that players collect from Zombies will be transformed by Dr. Strauss’ machine, turning the undead foes’ Dark Aether energy into “items you can use in combat.” While the items themselves are not mentioned, equipment and salvage seem likely, with Wonder Weapon drops also possible in the higher world tiers. Treyarch has not yet specified if this objective will be added to the other Outbreak maps as well.
The other two Outbreak-related additions launching alongside Sanatorium are on the smaller side, but both are welcome, nonetheless. First, a new Dirt Bike vehicle will be added, allowing players to speed around Sanatorium. All skins that have been unlocked for the vehicle can be equipped as well. New Zombies Outbreak Intel is being added, too, with players able to get more audio logs and transmissions from the game mode’s trial machine. More artifacts will likely be found around Sanatorium as well.
With Outbreak’s first major Easter egg quest confirmed for Season 3 as well, the mode seems to be getting off to a great start. Hopefully, this support continues, as the mode could eventually prove just as popular as Survival if Treyarch continues to expand upon it.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
