Players of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 on Xbox Series X/S are reporting crashes on startup that is making the game unplayable. The issues have come after players have purchased the next-generation upgrade sold by Activision.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 was released last year for PS4 and Xbox One, with an upgrade being released earlier this month with a $10 price tag. The upgrade brings higher resolution and framerates to the game, as well as spatial audio and other graphical improvements like dynamic shadows. Fans were excited to get their hands on the next-gen version of the game, especially after how well received Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1+2 was.
However, now that the upgrade has been available for just a few days Xbox Series X/S players are coming out in droves stating the upgrade has made their copies of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 unplayable. Players report the game freezing and crashing on the main menu repeatedly. As a result, the game is receiving a dirge of one-star reviews on the Xbox dashboard store with many players also saying that they are refunding the game entirely. Microsoft eventually released a statement saying that its Smart Delivery system is available to every developer, which Activision chose not to use for this upgrade, and to direct all questions about the game’s issues to Activision directly. Activision has released a statement saying it is aware of the issue and working on a fix.
Activision also elected to forego Microsoft’s Smart Delivery for their Xbox Series X/S release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War which had similar crashing issues upon release that did not get solved until a patch a few weeks later. Activision has never said why it has chosen to not use Smart Delivery, which lets players upgrade their Xbox One games for an upgraded Xbox Series X/S version for free.
Players have theorized that the issues lie in a server check that is initiated upon reaching the game’s main menu. To circumvent the problem, players are recommending either playing the game in offline mode, thus avoiding the server check, or simply uninstalling the next-gen upgraded version of the game and re-downloading the Xbox One version and playing that instead. Neither fix is very preferable so hopefully, the issue gets resolved quickly. Activision’s woes also come just a few weeks after Marvel’s Avengers had a similar problem when transferring save files from the PS4 to the PS5 versions of the game.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch port is slated to release sometime later this year.
