Those who have been wondering what creator of Gravity Falls, Alex Hirsch, has been up to lately, look no further. In a recent interview Hirsch has given multiple insights into his smash-hit series and said that he wants to continue the show through a video game.
Gravity Falls aired sporadically on Disney Channel and quickly became a favorite among adults and children alike. The show had an engaging story, complex relationships, and gorgeous art, but one of its strongest features was the mystery that fans themselves could hope to unravel by solving ciphers and paying attention to background information. The show was demanding to produce though, and as time went on it showed that Hirsch was growing exhausted from running it. Much of Hirsch’s difficulty revolved around censorship battles with Disney. Unfortunately, the show ended with season 2, but many felt the conclusion was somewhat rushed.
Now Hirsch has said he wishes to continue the series into season 3 with a video game. “My dream, if I had a magic wand, would be to make a really kick-ass Gravity Falls video game,” Hirsch said in an interview with Inverse. This prospective video game would explore more of the world, and off-screen character and plot development. However, Hirsch also added he believed it simply was not possible. Disney completely own the Gravity Falls IP, and from Hirsch’s point-of-view seem to have “shuttered their interactive department.” Hirsch added that if he owned the show, he would have loved to team up with an indie studio and create an amazing Gravity Falls game. Finally, Hirsch assured Gravity Falls fans that he still has several secret projects in the works with Netflix.
Hirsch is not wrong about Disney’s interactive department. It seems to be somewhat of a least-favorite child among Disney’s empire. The last big project mounted by the team at Disney Interactive was its toy box game Disney Infinity, which came out in 2013. The past few years of Disney Interactive’s history are riddled with staff lay-offs and the closure of past projects like Club Penguin Island. In 2018 Jam City took over for Disney and have since been churning out Disney themed mobile games like Frozen Adventures, another match-3 game.
Gravity Falls fans may be disappointed to hear the game is unlikely. Alex Hirsch seems to have the Midas touch, but is destined to fight Disney on any Gravity Falls related projects. Unlike David and Goliath where the little guy won, Disney will likely emerge victorious this round.
Some fans might be glad to know it will not happen though. There have certainly been IP’s fans have felt were tarnished in the past by their creators meddling with them after completion.
Gravity Falls is available for stream now on Disney Plus.
