Apex Legends Player Develops Creative Way to Identify Friendly Abilities

One Apex Legends player has come up with an idea to help differentiate friendly abilities and grenades from enemy ones. And it is an idea that could save players a lot of headaches.

Apex Legends is a fast-paced battle royale that is all about speed and quick reflexes. Skirmishes begin suddenly and can be over in mere minutes with one team losing the game that quickly. With every player in a squad playing a different character and having a loadout of various grenades and equipment, the screen can get cluttered with various explosions, areas of effect, and grenade indicators that make it difficult to tell where to go and where enemies are. This problem can get especially bad on the Switch version of Apex Legends where the lower resolution already puts players at a disadvantage against players on other platforms.

In the latest piece of great Apex Legends fan content, user wave_panda posted to the game’s subreddit with a great concept to help allay these frustrations for players. The video shows a simple toggle in the settings menu dubbed “Ally Tactical Colour.” The setting would allow players to set a color for ally abilities and equipment so, such as blue or purple, that would set it apart from the rest of the game and make it obvious what effects are safe for the player to go near and what aren’t.

The video uses the hero Caustic’s gas grenades as an example, which expand into a gas cloud and can limit visibility when thrown while also slowly damaging anyone inside of it. Changing an ability like that to be more clearly friendly would be a huge step towards improving player awareness in firefights. This would be especially helpful as the champion pool in Apex Legends is limited enough that players are bound to run into the enemies playing the same characters as them and their squadmates. A color change like this would make sure that it is easy to tell a friendly Caustic gas cloud from an enemy’s.

As commentators on the post point out, the change would be especially helpful for players who queue into matches alone and are placed on a team that is not using any voice chat to communicate with one another. In those teams, it can be nearly impossible to always know what abilities and equipment belong to what team in a skirmish. The post is hopeful that the change could be implemented in time for Apex Legends‘ ninth season, which currently scheduled to launch on May 4. It would be a quick turnaround time for developer Respawn Entertainment to get it in the game, but hopefully, they can make time to implement it sooner rather than later.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
