The Last of Us 2 Out of Bounds Video Reveals New Details About Controversial Scene

The Last of Us 2 has been out for less than a year, and yet, during its relatively short time on the market, it has broken numerous records. It’s won more Game of the Year awards than any other game in history, and also enjoyed the most successful PlayStation exclusive launch of all time. For all of the game’s success though, it has proven to be somewhat controversial with a section of the series’ fanbase.

While the game undoubtedly offers a huge visual improvement over its ageing predecessor, not everyone was happy about some of the narrative decisions made by the team at Naughty Dog. There were a few in particular that really irked fans, although none more so than Abby’s now infamous golf club rampage. Now, thanks to a little camera trickery, it’s possible to view that controversial scene and many others like it in a whole new light. Anybody who hasn’t gotten around to playing the game yet should be warned, however, that there are major spoilers ahead.

YouTuber Speclizer traveled out of bounds and manipulated the game’s internal camera in order to uncover details that just aren’t visible in a normal playthrough. Perhaps the most interesting of these comes during the now infamous golf club scene, where extra blood spatter animations become visible by switching the camera to Abby’s point of view. That’s not all that the five minute video uncovers, though.

A little later on, the YouTuber zooms in on a shot of Ellie playing the guitar to reveal that the character models in The Last of Us 2 have fingerprints. Another bit of camera manipulation reveals that Whitney’s PS Vita has the text “You’re Dead” on the screen moments after Ellie has slit her throat. The video also shows enemies’ teeth being knocked out of their mouths and a number of other interesting elements that give a much clearer indication of how the game’s engine and mechanics really work.

This isn’t the only recent revelation about Joel’s brutal demise either, with The Last of Us 2‘s director Neil Druckmann recently providing some insight as to how the scene came about during an interview with the Washington Post. Druckmann told the newspaper that the scene was inspired by a real life accident which left the director with a permanent dent in his skull. Given what happened to Joel though, he definitely got off lightly.

The Last of Us 2 is out now, exclusively for PS4.
