Harley Quinn is a fantastic little animated show for those who want a more lighthearted take on the DC universe, and with all its quirky characters and fun performances, it amassed a sizeable following of dedicated fans. When it seemed as though the show might be canceled after season 2, there was such an outcry that 3 months later, it was announced that the project would be renewed, after all, guaranteeing that the adventures of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy would continue.
If there’s one thing Harley Quinn has been known for, in particular, it’s that it isn’t afraid to poke fun at the surrounding DC Universe and the characters who inhabit it. So when co-showrunner Patrick Schumacker tweeted about directing a special guest star for season 3, people naturally assumed that it would be someone with some connection to the DC universe outside the show.
While the Tweet itself didn’t give away much, there were some interesting hints dropped about the identity of the guest star, with Schumacker saying he didn’t think anyone would see them coming. The co-showrunner did respond to a lot of guesses though, confirming a few people who it definitely wouldn’t be. Some of the answers shot down include Tara Strong, the original voice of Harley Quinn, John Cena, who appears in The Suicide Squad, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, who is set to appear as Black Adam in the DC Extended Universe.
Two small hints were given as well, one being that the actor had not appeared in animation before, meaning they are likely someone who most people would recognize from live-action films. The other, more subtle poke was the use of the hashtag “#DontGetTooAttached,” a tagline that has been promoted alongside the recent marketing for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. As a result, it’s not too crazy to suggest that the special guest star will be someone who is also appearing in that film, though nothing has been explicitly confirmed.
There’s still plenty of time to speculate, however, as season 3 of Harley Quinn doesn’t have any official release date yet, just a generic ‘late 2021/early 2022’ window. While there are certainly lots of potential options for interesting crossovers on the show, it seems likely that the team is interested in collaborating with the upcoming DC films, and that could have some fun results for fans of both continuities. Until then, fans will have to bide their time until some more concrete news comes out about the series.
Harley Quinn seasons 1 and 2 are available on HBO Max.
