Rockstar didn’t hold back at all in making sure that its open-world sandbox Grand Theft Auto 5 saw absolute success. That included making sure that its massive roster of voice actors was as experienced as they were diverse. When that came to choosing the role of Michael De Santa, Grand Theft Auto 5 voice actor Ned Luke said that it was a pretty basic process.
Over on popular mobile app Tik Tok, Luke took the time to reply to a question from a fellow actor who was curious as to the auditioning process for the role of Michael. Rockstar is known for taking its time in crafting its games, despite fans desperately waiting for the next installment. In the case of Luke, however, prior to auditioning for Grand Theft Auto 5, the actor didn’t even know about Rockstar.
Luke says that the process started with an audition offer courtesy of his agent, who told the actor that he had an audition for a video game. Not only had the actor been unaware of Rockstar, but he was reluctant to do a voice role for a video game. However, Luke had his agent send over the script and, once finished, the actor did a complete 180. The TikTok describing the situation can be viewed here.
Convinced, Luke not only said he would audition for the part, but was determined to land the part. Once the actor completed the initial audition he, along with friend and voice actor for Trevor, Steven Ogg, were part of what the actor calls an “All-Back.” Essentially, Luke and a second actor auditioning for Trevor were paired up while Ogg and a second actor auditioning for Michael were paired. After Luke and Ogg were up to audition side-by-side, they threw away the scripts entirely and “went at it.” When they left, Luke was so confident in their performances that he simply said to Ogg that he’d see him on the set.
The character of Michael De Santa isn’t one lacking in confidence or ambition, so it makes sense that the man voicing the character would reflect those same qualities. Roughly a week before, Luke sent some familiar advice in the form of Michael over to xQc who had been amidst a bank heist on the NoPixel server. Rockstar isn’t known for maintaining protagonists between games, although the most recent iteration of Grand Theft Auto is resulting in a lot of cool interactions between voice actors, content creators, and fans. The next installment in the series couldn’t come any quicker, though when it finally does, it’ll be sad to see the old voice actors go.
