‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Speeds into Cinemas With Record Opening

‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ broke the record for a U.S. video game movie debut (via Paramount)

Despite early misgivings, Sonic the Hedgehog has broken the record for a U.S. video game movie debut.

Paramount’s troubled adaptation raced to the top of the weekend box office, earning $57 million in three days.

(For comparison, 2019’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu pulled in $54.3 million.)

It is expected to gross $68 million by the end of this long holiday weekend.

The $87 million film is based on a Japanese video game series of the same name, first released in 1991 for the Sega Genesis.

Players control a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog, navigating various levels at high speeds, jumping between platforms, avoiding obstacles, and collecting gold rings.

The perfect plot device for a 1.5-hour movie, amiright?

Video games have been fodder for live-action films for nearly as long as Sonic has been alive: Starting with Super Mario Bros. in 1993, distributors have tapped into titles like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Assassin’s Creed.

Future Detective Pikachu and Sonic sequels are already in the works.

Sonic the Hedgehog‘s record-breaking launch surprised audiences and executives alike, considering the unpalatable first look that Paramount released in 2018.

Director Jeff Fowler listened to fan feedback uproar and redesigned the character though it meant delaying the flick’s delivery.

Some things, it turns out, are worth waiting for.

Learning to embrace his new home on Earth, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and BFF Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination.

Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Neal McDonough also star.
