Cosplay remains an incredible form of fan adoration with players utilizing what they can to craft often stunning costumes of their favorite characters. In some cases, cosplayers take the opportunity to step ahead of the pack and tackle characters that are yet-to-be playable. For one cosplayer, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Valhalla served as the perfect inspiration.
UK based cosplayer Amazonian Cosplay (amazoniancos) has been updating her Instagram profile to show off her female Eivor cosplay. There is so much life and attention given to the outfit that it’s easy to get lost in all the little details that focus on the Viking aesthetic.
Going through Amazonian Cosplay’s page shows numerous shots of her Eivor cosplay and how amazing it is in adapting to different settings. In her most blood-soaked version, Eivor is drenched in red with the three blood stripes running down her face. Others show off the blue facepaint that has becoming the defining visual element of Eivor’s design for both genders. Her account is worth exploring as she does numerous characters all with amazing detail.
While Amazonian Cosplay tackled Eivor as a women, there are likely to be Eivor cosplays in both the male and female variants. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla handles gender in a unique way by making Eivor’s gender changeable at any time. It’s a very different way of approaching gender choice in games which often lock players to their decision at the start of a game.
With many praising Valhalla‘s take on free choice in gender, some of the game’s developers were not happy with the decision. According to reports, the original intention was for Eivor to only be a woman but that idea was shot down. Thus, the game has allowed for cosplayers of both genders to tackle Eivor, although women and men cosplaying characters not matching their gender has always been welcomed by the cosplaying community.
Reports indicate that the main dissenter in Eivor only being a woman was Valhalla Director Ashraf Ismail. Following numerous allegations of abuse and misconduct, Ismail has been fired from Ubisoft. This firing occurs after Ismail stepped down from his position as director of Valhalla soon after the allegations were made public alongside a torrent of allegations against other Ubisoft employees.
Eivor cosplays will likely be a common fixture in the run up to Valhalla‘s November launch. Once the game is out, cosplayers will have a chance to tackle the many side characters that exist within the land of vikings.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla launches November 17 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
