Nintendo has made a concerted effort to bring many Wii U games to the Nintendo Switch, but it seems as though it may also be porting over some original Wii titles at some point in the near future as well. Amazon UK has leaked the existence of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Nintendo Switch, perhaps indicating that an announcement for the game will be made sooner rather than later.
No other details about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Switch port can be taken from the Amazon listing, but it wouldn’t be all that surprising for the game to eventually make its way to the Switch. After all, Nintendo has already tested an HD version of Skyward Sword before it ultimately decided to move forward with an HD remake of Wind Waker instead. Not only that, but series producer Eiji Aonuma has hinted at the possibility in the past.
Eiji Aonuma teasing Skyward Sword for the Switch is the most damning evidence that this Amazon listing is legitimate, but some fans may be wondering why Nintendo would want to re-release this particular Zelda game. Well, it’s possibly one of the most underplayed main series Zelda titles, due in part to it requiring the Wii MotionPlus accessory. While Skyward Sword sales were impressive at first, it didn’t have quite the same lasting sales impact as other games in the series, so Nintendo may be looking at an HD remaster as a way to get more people to play the game.
Another possibility is that Nintendo has already remastered the other 3D Zelda games, with HD remasters for Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on the Wii U, and Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask getting updates on the 3DS. Skyward Sword remains one of the only 3D Zelda games that hasn’t gotten an HD facelift, and so it makes sense that it would be prioritized over re-releasing some of the other games.
If a Skyward Sword HD remaster is in the works, it will be interesting to see when exactly it’s released. 2021 is the Zelda franchise’s 35th anniversary, and rumor has it that Nintendo has big plans for the series next year to celebrate. Perhaps Skyward Sword will just be one piece of that puzzle, similarly to how Nintendo is rumored to be releasing a Super Mario collection for the plumber’s 35th anniversary this year.
Then again, maybe it will be released this year to bolster the Switch’s holiday lineup. Besides Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Nintendo has been secretive about its holiday plans for the Switch, but it’s expected to reveal more information in a rumored Nintendo Direct for August 2020. Maybe Skyward Sword for Switch is one of the planned announcements. Then again, it’s also possible that this Amazon listing is simply an error, and so Zelda fans should keep their expectations in check.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is available exclusively on Wii.
