Shazam 2 Director Creates Spoof Trailer From User Reviews

Everyone is learning how to entertain themselves during the pandemic, and apparently director David F. Sandberg has that technique down to an art form. Sandberg has released a “trailer” for his upcoming film Shazam! 2. The catch is that filming hasn’t even begun on the much anticipated DC sequel.

Sandberg recently discovered that users on the social media site Letterboxd were somehow already posting reviews of his currently incorporeal film, which is currently set to release in late 2022. In reality, they are only “reviews” due to being labeled as such, as the posts themselves are little more than the equivalent of vaguely film-related tweets. However, rather than chuckling to himself and moving on, the good-humored director decided to use these comments to his advantage by incorporating them into a short mock-trailer for the film. “We haven’t shot Shazam! 2 yet but there are already reviews up on Letterboxd,” he explained on Twitter, “I’m pretty sure that means we’re allowed to start using review quotes for marketing.”

What followed was a 30 second showcase of several “reviews” taken from the site, framed over footage of the first Shazam! film as if it were a genuine marketing clip. It features such quotes as “I’m fine with this” from user Roberto the Person and “David F. Sandberg is a sweetheart! <3 <3 <3” by Tzevma2019. As if to drive home the style of comments used for the faux trailer, the final post featured simply reads “I’m gonna be 19 when this comes out what,” dripping with feelings of wonder and confusion from its writer, a young wordsmith named Rat.

Shazam! (exclamation point included) features young teen Billy Batson struggling with life as a foster kid. Through the standard strange series of events present in your average superhero story, he gains the power to transform into the superpowered adult hero Shazam at will. 2019’s humorous yet heartfelt film adaptation charmed audiences all over, leaving many hungry for a sequel. So it’s not all that unusual to see people posting about their anticipation for 2022’s Shazam! 2. Though it’s a bit more unusual for those posts to be used in this manner. Not that it’s a bad thing.

It’s good to see this sort of engagement from people like Sandberg. With many aspects of the entertainment world shut down for the foreseeable future, these little interactions can be invaluable to fans who just want to know they haven’t been forgotten. Sometimes a virtual panel during one of the summer’s many online conventions isn’t quite enough, so that little personal touch is a welcome indication that Sandberg not only appreciates the fans, but genuinely enjoys the work.

Shazam! 2 is currently set to release in November 2022, though another delay wouldn’t be entirely surprising.
