Parrying is one of several options that players have for dealing with a variety of different attacks in Mortal Shell, and indeed it can be quite powerful. That said, it is not extremely easy to perform a successful parry in this new action RPG from Cold Symmetry, but with a bit of instruction and some practice fans should be able to use this technique to counter their foes’ offense fairly consistently.
To note, players are only able to parry in Mortal Shell after obtaining the Tarnished Seal, which is found inside of Fallgrim Tower. This location is accessible very early during a playthrough of Mortal Shell, and the Seal itself is up several flights of stairs next to the Old Prisoner. While this is something that many players will already be aware of it, it is the first step to parrying and is thus worth mentioning.
After earning the Tarnished Seal a player will see it affixed to their character’s back, and keeping an eye on it is an important part of parrying. More specifically, if the Seal has an orange glow (or no glow at all) as an enemy performs an attack then that specific strike can be parried, and successful execution comes down exclusively to timing. On the other hand, if the Tarnished Seal turns red in the face of an attack then it cannot be parried, and fans should instead dodge or use Harden in Mortal Shell to avoid taking damage.
Once a player has verified that they can parry a specific attack, they will then need to press L1/LB at the correct time to do so, and this is where things can get difficult. Essentially, fans should be looking to time their parries so that the Tarnished Seal is in front of their character and has a white glow when their adversary’s attack would connect. This means that parries come out a bit slower in Mortal Shell then they do in games like Dark Souls, and it may take players some time to adjust.
One last thing to say about parries is that while they can be executed when the Tarnished Seal has no glow, as previously mentioned, it is best to go for them when the item is glowing orange. This is because the orange glow indicates that a Mortal Shell player has the Resolve required to execute an Empowered Riposte, and this powerful attack, which both deals damage and heals the character, alone makes mastering the parry a worthwhile endeavor.
Mortal Shell is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
