Horizon Zero Dawn PC Patch Addresses Crashes and Graphics Issues

Horizon Zero Dawn saw tremendous success when first released onto the PlayStation platform, and the surprising announcement of a PC port left PC players excited to get their hands on Guerrilla Games’ open world gem. They finally got their chance when the Complete Edition of Horizon Zero Dawn was ported over to the platform earlier this month but were met with countless bugs and crashes upon loading up the game for the first time. Today, a patch was released by Guerrilla that will hopefully fix some of the port’s issues.

The patch notes specify that this latest update’s primary goal is to “resolve some of the frustrating crashes we’ve been seeing since launch” as well as fix some graphical issues. Players have been reporting these issues since the release day of the game, and the technical flaws have held back an otherwise great port of the game. Beyond the crashes, out of sync animations and startup issues have also been running rampant.

Recently, an anonymous programmer claimed that the Horizon Zero Dawn PC port is a debug build, something that could certainly be the cause for some of the crashing issues present in the game. Though this may or may not be true, the game is in dire need of more stability updates like the 1.02 patch released today. If this patch does succeed at fixing the crashes, Guerrilla can prioritize framerate fixes and solving other issues going forward.

Given how well the first game ran on the PS4, it is certainly a bit of a surprise to see how messy the release of this port has been. While not quite at the level of the disastrous Batman: Arkham Knight PC release back in 2015, some of the problems being had with Horizon Zero Dawn right now are ones that should have been caught ahead of its release.

Despite the many issues present in this version of Horizon, it does seem that Guerrilla is working as hard as possible to get them fixed quickly. Utilizing player feedback from Reddit to prioritize what fixes need to be made, Guerrilla has kept an eye on its dedicated community and has kept them consistently updated on when they can expect new patches. They even shouted out the most helpful players for their user-made list of issues, which was a nice gesture.

Though it is sad to see the PC version of the game release in such a messy way, it is good to know that Guerrilla has no plans to let it stay that way. Hopefully, today’s update ends the crashing issues and allows the team to focus on making the game as stable as the PS4 version of Aloy’s incredible journey. If the game’s sequel Horizon Forbidden West ever sees a PC port, Guerrilla will certainly know what areas need to be focused on before sharing the game with a new platform.

Horizon Zero Dawn is now available on PC and PS4.
