Observer, from developer Bloober Team, is one of the most underrated horror games of this generation. Created by the team behind recent horror hits such as Blair Witch and Layers of Fear, the game mixes the team’s signature adventure game style with cyberpunk-horror. The game reviewed favorably at launch and has since received a cult status, and now Bloober Team is hoping to reignite interest with the upcoming releases of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 with an expanded remaster in the form of Observer: System Redux.
Observer: System Redux was announced earlier this year and will act as an enhanced remaster of the original 2017 psychological horror game, expanding on the story and refining its gameplay. The game also features fully remastered visuals, made to take advantage of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X’s unique features. In a trailer released from Bloober Team, the game’s lighting artist details how the team has enhanced the visuals for the remaster.
In the latest trailer, Bloober Team’s Tomasz Bentkowski details how Observer’s lighting has been improved in Observer: System Redux, such as how the game will now utilize newly rendered 4K textures. The remaster will also feature brand new character models, HDR and utilize the next-generation console’s ray-tracing abilities. Bentkowski also hints that Bloober Team will be revealing how System Redux expands on the gameplay and narrative of the original game in the near future.
Fans of horror and cyberpunk games are already likely very excited for Observer: System Redux, which is expected to be a launch title for the next-generation of consoles. One question that remains to be answered is whether the game’s new story content will feature Rutger Hauer, the voice behind the original game’s protagonist, Daniel Lazarski, and iconic actor from films such as Blade Runner, who unfortunately passed away in July 2019. So far, all of the footage released of System Redux has utilized the voice recordings from the original release, implying that Bloober Team has not recast Lazarski in the remaster.
Surprisingly, Observer: System Redux is not the only title Bloober Team is releasing on next-generations this holiday as the team is also currently developing The Medium, an Xbox Series X exclusive launch title that utilizes the system’s SSD to render two game worlds simultaneously. The Medium also features a soundtrack composed by the beloved Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka and is apparently Bloober Team’s most ambitious project yet.
Observer: System Redux releases later this year on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
