When Nintendo’s team-based shooter Splatoon 2 rounded its third anniversary last month, Nintendo of America announced three bonus Splatfests to celebrate. The first, a rerun of the previous event asking players to choose between Team Chicken and Team Egg to solve that classic conundrum of “which came first,” begins today at 3:00 p.m. PT and lasts for 48 hours.
Splatfests have been a major part of both Splatoon games on the Wii U and Switch, offering players opposing teams to rally behind, and changing the overall aesthetics of Inkopolis to reflect each events’ proceedings. The first Chicken vs. Egg Splatfest in Splatoon 2 took place in March 2018, with Team Egg attracting the most players but Team Chicken clutching more solo and team victories to ultimately win the contest.
Nintendo stopped supporting timed events in Splatoon 2 for about a year before bringing them back in May with a “bonus one-off” revival of the contentious Ketchup vs. Mayo Splatfest. The attention that revival garnered must have shown Nintendo how many people were still interested in the shooter, given they announced the three-year anniversary events a few months later.
Themes and dates for the two bonus Splatfests set to follow the Chicken vs. Egg rerun this weekend have yet to be announced, but last month Nintendo of America confirmed they would be taking place “before the end of March 2021.” Splatoon was one of 2018’s most talked about games on Twitter and the series clearly still has a strong following to this day, so hopefully fans can expect to hear news about a possible Splatoon 3 in the near future.
