Pokemon GO is still going strong with events, updates, and the playerbase. One update that many players are looking forward to is the Mega Evolution update. This will bring over the special battle mechanic introduced in Pokemon X and Pokemon Y.
In the base Pokemon games, Mega Evolution can be used on certain fully evolved Pokemon to transform them into more powerful versions of themselves temporarily for battle. This will change their appearances as well as possibly changes their types and abilities. It was announced for Pokemon GO back in June, but not many details on it have been released.
While Niantic hasn’t revealed new details about Mega Evolution officially, dataminers have gone into Pokemon GO‘s files to look for anything referring to the upcoming mechanic. The data found has revealed a lot of interesting details as well as which Mega Evolved Pokemon will appear in Pokemon GO first.
The details that are seemingly confirmed have been determined via reading various currently unused text files relating to Mega Evolution. The main details are:
- Pokemon in Pokemon GO that can Mega Evolve need Mega Energy to Mega Evolve. Less Mega Energy is needed the more friendly a Pokemon is with the player.
- Mega Evolution for a Pokemon only lasts 2 hours.
- Only one Pokemon out of all the player’s Pokemon can be evolved at once.
- Players cannot trade Pokemon that are Mega Evolved.
- Mega Evolved Pokemon get a separate Pokedex slot from non-Mega Evolved Pokemon.
- Players can collect Mega Energy from Mega Raids.
- The first available Mega Raids will have Mega Venusaur, Mega Charizard X, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Blastoise as the raid bosses.
- Mega Beedrill may also be available initially among the Kanto starters.
- Mega Evolved Pokemon deal increased damage during raids.
- Mega Raid rewards are based on how fast players complete them.
- Mega Evolved Pokemon cannot be used in the Battle League against other players.
- New Special Research Tasks will be released revolving around Mega Evolved Pokemon.
There are also many small details such as Mega Evolved Pokemon not being able to be assigned to gyms. Considering the Mega Evolved Pokemon that are confirmed to come with the update, it is likely that the Mega Evolutions will be released in region order. This would mean that other than the Pokemon already mentioned, Gengar, Alakazam, Kangaskhan, Pinsir, Gyarados, Aerodactyl, and Mewtwo will get their new forms. However, this is still speculation.
Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
