The world of Mario has been entertaining gamers for thirty-five years, and is finally getting closer to making its theme park debut in Osaka, Japan, as the first part of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan. Fans of the mustached plumber have been keenly following the development of the area, and the latest video shows some of the new animatronic characters moving for the first time.
The video posted by YouTuber Bakuchou Rocking Blues shows the Mario themed area in both the day and night, revealing a wandering Koopa Troopa, as well as a stack of Goombas. Other interesting details include a Thwomp that drops down, spinning coins, an apple eating Yoshi that appears switched off, and Bullet Bill. There is also a huge Bowser’s Castle, rumored to be the location for the Mario Kart themed ride. The only other ride to have been confirmed at present is a Yoshi themed ride believed to be called Yoshi’s Adventure.
The new video shows Super Nintendo World in Osaka, which is due to open in 2021. A similar themed area is also under construction at Universal Studios Hollywood, and due to be built at Epic Universe in Orlando, Florida. However the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in problems for both, with the former now expected to open in 2021 or 2022, and the latter paused indefinitely. Universal Studios Singapore has also been reported to be a future home for a Super Nintendo World themed area, but its development is also likely to be affected by the pandemic.
Indeed, despite the mixed fortunes of Nintendo consoles over the last few decades, the Super Mario series is the favorite gaming franchise in the U.S. While several other Nintendo owned properties also feature in the top ten of favorite franchises, Donkey Kong in third, Pokemon in fifth, and The Legend of Zelda in seventh. Although a Donkey Kong Country area has been rumored, Super Nintendo World is presently only confirmed to feature Mario based properties, but if the parks are successful Nintendo could look at bringing more of its characters to the real world.
With such well-known and loved characters, it is perhaps surprising that it took Nintendo this long to enter the world of theme parks. Fans have speculated about the idea for many years, given the family friendly nature of Nintendo’s properties and the huge scope for turning them into entertaining rides and experiences. The huge success of the Switch meant 2020 looked like being the perfect time to launch, but lockdowns and limitations related to COVID-19 have added a huge amount of uncertainty to this kind of entertainment venture.
Gamers looking forward to throwing a few red shells will have to wait until at least 2021 to see if the experience lives up to expectations.
