Skyrim: Every Unique Mace In The Game, Ranked From Worst To Best

Among all the weapon types in Skyrim, maces are perhaps some of the rarest when it comes to unique weapons. In the entire game there’s only five of them, and out of those only four are actually available for the player to find and use without using cheats and console commands to their advantage.

With that in mind, choosing the mace as a go-to weapon can be quite a statement, and it’s a great way to dish out some serious damage at close range. It’s also an excellent option for one-handed fighters who might want to up their damage overall and prefer to go for something more unique than just a regular sword. Here’s all the four unique maces and where to find them, as well as the fifth mace which can be acquired through console commands.

5 Lunar Iron Mace

Not all players might be familiar with this highly niche collection of weapons known as Lunar weapons. Granted, the concept is much cooler than the weapons themselves, as they mostly end up being highly inconvenient. Regardless, the Lunar weapons do have two types of maces, the first one being the Lunar Iron Mace. As an iron weapon, it’s not exactly the strongest piece out there, but the higher the player’s level is, the better its effects will be.

Head over to Silent Moons Camp, which is located against the lush mountains northwest of Whiterun, overlooking the plains around the city. There’s some bandits around that should be dealt with first, but overall the fight isn’t too difficult. It’s recommended to only come here after level 6 or higher has been reached to get the best enchantment on this iron mace. This mace in particular can be found nearby the forge, and will deal 9 damage. However, during night time when the moon is visible, it will deal 20 burning damage on enemies. Very niche, but great for those traveling at night.

4 Lunar Steel Mace

Those who are intrigued by the idea of Lunar weapons and absolutely want their hands on those rare maces, it’s recommended to go for the Lunar Steel Mace rather than the iron one. Tougher and more valuable than the iron one, it’s also found in the Silent Moons Camp northwest of Whiterun, and should usually be somewhere around the forge in the encampment.

Keep in mind that if the player accesses the camp before level 4, the Lunar Steel Mace won’t actually be available at the camp, and they’ll have to get the Lunar Iron Mace instead. Moreover, the Lunar Steel Mace spawns in its best version in the camp only after the player reached level 8, so the best time to come and deal with the bandits is actually after level 8, since both Lunar Maces will have the best stats. Just like it’s iron counterpart, the steel mace burns enemies for 20 points when the moon is out. Otherwise, it deals 10 damage.

3 Horksbane

Players looking for a weapon with the most redundant effect (not enchantment!) should absolutely get their fingers on the Horksbane, a unique mace included in Dragonborn DLC. As the name suggests, this modest-looking mace is extremely effective against horkers. It’s actually very similar in theme to a unique warhammer also found in the game named Trollsbane, which is effective against trolls. While a troll-slaying hammer makes sense, a mace against horkers which are relatively easy to kill seems like an exaggeration.

Still, if this does pique the Dragonborn’s interest, they can simply head over to the eastern side of Solstheim, where a smaller island not too far off its shore will have a location marker for Horker Island. The body of Saden can be found upon arrival, and the mace is right next to them. It can be used to take down the boss of the island, Lord Tusk, which is a powerful special horker. Although its utility is questionable with only 10 damage dealt to other enemies, it’s backstory is pretty amusing. Apparently, Saden hated horkers so much that his hatred flowed into his weapon and gave it its special effect.

2 Prelate’s Mace

Players with the Dawnguard DLC installed will eventually make contact with Knight-Paladin Gelebor in Darkfall Cave during one of the many quests. In fact, it’s pretty inevitable to meet him when the player heads out to hunt down the bow of Auri-El. Gelebor is special in many ways, since he’s one of the last surviving snow elves, so it’s only fitting he has a weapon that’s even more special: Prelate’s Mace.

Unfortunately, this gorgeous-looking mace cannot be looted off Gelebor’s body. It can only be acquired through console commands, and even then the game doesn’t actually let the player use it or wield it. Still, it does have its own stats that prove it’s quite the powerful tool. The mace does 13 damage, and for that reason alone ranks higher than any of the previous maces, and seems to be made out of moonstone. Some modders have thankfully refined the gameplay enough to make everything in the Prelate’s collection available, and they even have their own unique enchantments. The details for the mod by philpip31 can be found here.

1 Mace Of Molag Bal

It’s pretty obvious there’s a huge lack of actually good, unique maces in Skyrim, but thankfully the Daedric quests never let players down with their insane rewards. The Mace of Molag Bal is perhaps one of the most powerful Daedric artifacts in the game, and it looks absolutely menacing as well. Its base damage is much higher than all other maces at 16 points, and on top of that is does 25 damage to stamina and magicka. Even better, if an enemy dies in 3 seconds or less, it fills an empty soul gem. Deadly, and useful!

To get this absolute beast of a mace, the player should head over to the southwest of Skyrim, into the city of Markarth. Going up the stairs to reach the Jarl’s Understone Keep, they’ll pass by an abandoned house where Tyranus, a Vigilant of Stendarr, will ask for their help to investigate the house. Get ready for a truly horrific poltergeist-like experience inside, but it’ll all be worth it, since Molag Bal himself will contact the Dragonborn and offer a quest, the reward of which is the mace itself.
