With the launch of next generation consoles on the horizon, many game studios and publishers have started announcing plans for games that are going to be cross-gen titles. Thanks to Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system and Sony’s willingness to leave the decision up to studios, many have opted to allow current-gen players the ability to upgrade for free. This includes some of the most anticipated titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, and more. Unfortunately, players now know that Activision isn’t going to follow the growing trend of free cross-generation upgrades with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
Rumors regarding a potential upgrade fee began circulating earlier this week when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare dataminers found bundle information on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Along with a standard and ultimate edition, the one that seemed to catch the attention of most fans was the Cross-Gen Bundle version. Thanks to today’s big reveal, players now have a bit more details on what this pack actually entails for those looking to play on the Xbox Series X or PS5.
Players looking to secure a next-gen version of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War can purchase the Cross-Gen Bundle to get access to the current game when it launches and then immediate access to the updated next-gen version immediately upon launch. The bundle retails for $69.99, ten US dollars more than a normally priced game. Like the other versions, pre-ordering this bundle also gains early beta access, a Confrontation Weapons Pack, as well as the Frank Woods Bundle for immediate use in Warzone and Modern Warfare.
It’s worth noting that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is going to be backward compatible on next-gen platforms. The game also supports cross-progression across all game modes and cross-saving on current and next-gen platforms. However, without the Cross-Gen Bundle, players won’t see any of the next generation features and enhancements.
While the lack of a true free upgrade may disappoint some fans, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War seems to be bringing a few newer ideas to the table. The title is a collaboration between Raven Software and Treyarch, with the former handling the campaign and the latter taking charge of the multiplayer. Intended to be a direct sequel to the original Black Ops, the campaign features numerous side missions and multiple endings that are influenced by player choices made during the campaign. With optional missions and multiple possible endings, the campaign seems to be attempting to give players more to do than a typical Call of Duty campaign, with more incentive to come back and play through multiple times.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be released November 13 for PS4, Xbox, and PC with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
