With the next-gen console due for release in a matter of months, it makes sense that you might want to start preparing yourself if you’re going to place a PS5 pre-order. The problem is, though, that we haven’t heard from Sony on some keys bits of information. What we do have, though you can find right here.
Do we have a price for the PS5? Nope. How about a release date? Nothing specific beyond Holiday 2020. And so, with that time window drawing ever closer, it’s no surprise that those of you out there who are thinking about pre-ordering a PS5 are eager for an update.
While Sony is sticking to its silence, all we can do is gather together the various hints and rumours we’ve seen out there. At least that will give you some idea of what to expect when PS5 pre-orders do eventually go live. Unfortunately, we don’t have any definitive answers for you right now, but we’ll be sure to return to update this page once any new announcements are made.
For anything else outside of PS5 pre-order info, do have a flick through our guide to the PS5 specs, games, release date and more. That should help you decide if it really is the next-gen console for you.
Can I pre-order the PS5?
Nope. We’ve toured around the various retailers where you’d expect to be able to place a PS5 pre-order but they’re all displaying the same pre-sale page. All you can do is leave your email address and you’ll be notified once they’re taking orders.
If you want to check them out for yourself, you can find these pages at the likes of Amazon US, GameStop, Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Amazon UK, Currys PC World, Game and more.
Feel free to drop your email in there, or you can ensure you hear about all the latest PS5 pre-order info by bookmarking this page or giving Jelly Deals a follow on Twitter.
When will a PS5 pre-order be available?
Another one we simply don’t have an answer to right now.
However, after rumours swirled around back in July that PS5 pre-orders would be going live very soon, Sony’s Worldwide Head of Marketing Eric Lempel assured fans they wouldn’t come as a surprise. “I think it’s safe to say we’ll let you know when preorder will happen,” said Lempel. “It’s not going to happen with a minute’s notice.”
Since then, Sony has invited some players in the US to register for a PS5 pre-order. It all seems a bit of a mess, though, as you still can’t actually buy the console. What it does allow you to do is register for an opportunity to be one of the first to pre-order a PS5 – whatever the hell that means. There’s no price or release date info provided, nor do you actually have to hand over any money.
Instead, it looks like it’s simply a way of trying to get the next-gen console into the hands of actual players, rather than touts who will look to resell it at a premium. At least Sony is trying to take this important step if there’s a chance that stock will be limited at launch and demand will be extremely high.
At least, then, we can expect to get a bit of a heads up before we’ll be able to pre-order the PS5. With any luck, this announcement will come alongside the price and release date of the new console so we can be fully prepared for what to expect. Speaking of that…
How much will the PS5 cost?
You might sense a theme here: we do not know yet. Sony is copying Microsoft’s approach and keeping very quiet about the price of its upcoming console. You get the impression that both are waiting for one to make the first move so the other can undercut them with a better price. We’d rather they didn’t play these games and just tell us how much their damn boxes are going to cost.
The only thing we can do until someone speaks up, then, is to look at the price the current-gen consoles launched for and boldly guesstimate the cost from there. Chances are it won’t be accurate in the slightest, but it should give you a decent ballpark figure to work on for now.
The PS4 launch price was $399 / £350. Considering the considerable bump in technology and the seven years that have passed since then, it seems incredibly unlikely that the PS5 will retail for the same price.
It might be more sensible to look back even further to the $599 / £425 launch price for the PS3 to get a better idea of what the PS5 will cost. That original announcement stunned most of the industry and has developed into a scathing meme against Sony, so it would be a brave move to come out at that price. It wouldn’t be too shocking to see something in that region, though.
The one saving grace is the addition of the PS5 Digital Edition, which is expected to cost less than the main console. Dropping the disc drive will obviously give you a small discount, though it shouldn’t be anything too major as, apart from that, the Digital Edition is the exact same console.
Whatever happens, it’s going to put a not-so-unsubtle dent in your bank account.
Anyway, we’re going to leave it there with our PS5 pre-order speculation for now. We’ll be sure this page is updated with any new information that is revealed or announced over the coming weeks. And when PS5 pre-orders do finally drop, we’ll use this guide to bring you all the retailers that are offering a PS5 pre-order. Hopefully, we’ll catch you soon!
