After four days of almost non-stop news, this year’s digital version of Gamescom has finally winded down. It’s been an especially good week for indie games, with dozens of independent titles getting highlighted during Gamescom. This includes Monster Harvest, a new game from publisher Merge Games and developer Maple Powered Games that looks set to be a fun twist on Stardew Valley.
Few games have left quite as memorable an impression on the indie game scene in recent years as the pixel-based farming sim, so it’s understandable that plenty of other farming games have been popping up. Where Monster Harvest stands apart from most of these, though, is the fact that it’s a Pokemon-style monster-battler as well.
Besides growing the usual fruits and vegetables, players will also be able to use magical slimes to mutate their crops into sentient creatures called Planimals. These collectible critters will be utilized in turn-based battles against a variety of monsters, as well as aid players in exploring more of Monster Harvest’s world. Of course, being a Stardew-style farming sim too, the game will also task players with running their farm, crafting tools, and interacting with the characters that inhabit the town of Planimal Point.
There’s no firm release date yet, but Merge Games states in the games’ reveal trailer and in its Steam page state that Monster Harvest will be “coming soon” to PC and consoles, so it shouldn’t be long until fans of Stardew Valley can get a little more RPG action with their virtual farming experience.
Monster Harvest will be released soon for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
